...and speaking of stupidity...

Wow:

Liberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations. There are three sources of errors in conveying biblical meaning:

* lack of precision in the original language, such as terms underdeveloped to convey new concepts of Christianity
* lack of precision in modern language
* translation bias in converting the original language to the modern one.

Of these three sources of errors, the last introduces the largest error, and the biggest component of that error is liberal bias. Large reductions in this error can be attained simply by retranslating the KJV into modern English.[1]

As of 2009, there is no fully conservative translation of the Bible which satisfies the following ten guidelines:[2]

What an amazing project. Because the bible isn't already enough of a fairy tale, these guys feel the need to rephrase it in a manner more suited to their politics. Howso? Well, it's right there on the site, but let me point to just one of the "ten guidelines":

4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop;[4] defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle".

Remember folks, "peace is war". So when they call Jesus the 'Prince of Peace', you know what they really mean.

Confession of a sometime translator

I have to confess to the misfortune of having a degree in biblical studies. Hey, I was young and naive at the time! Nevertheless, the holes in this translation agenda are so big you could fly a C-5 through them. Anyone who has seriously looked at the text of the Bible in the original languages realizes justed how messed up it is. There are places where words are missing, and where the text simply makes no sense. The KJV was translated from poor manuscripts and is full of errors. It is sad that these people seem to need so much certainty, but I recently suggested on my blog that they are really looking for political power. It's just a lot easier to convince the unwary if they call it "biblical religion." Baaah.

so I could tell these guys they're going to Hell.

And not that sissified liberal hell, either!

Nope, the Real Thing:

6. Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Hell or the Devil.

I mean, this is such a joke - don't these idiots have any idea just how absurd they come off to anyone with even half a clue? What an embarrassment.

I have a clue - and a map.

Hell is a very real place. Two of them, in fact. Both get quite cold in the winter.

Silly, geographically-deprived nonbeliver!

(There is also the version involving an aeroport, no beer, and bad hotel coffee. I think you've been there.)

You Goin' to Hail, Boy.

Other than being physically threatened, the closest I think I came to a hell was a sort of pathetic one where I was stuck in a Greyhound Bus station on New Years Eve. At the stroke of midnight, a handful of the bums and ragged travelers rose and began to sing. It was like Disney gone bad.

There is no colder place in the universe than a Greyhound Bus station on New Years Eve, with no family or friends in sight, just depleted alcoholics singing Auld Lang Syne and cheering "Happy New Year!" with gap-toothed, boozy grins.

Only one year to achieve this?

I was hoping it would take longer, keep them out of our hair for a few years if possible. I note that they are only working on the New Testament; it's refreshing to have Christians not try to claim that the Old Testament has anything to do with their belief-set, unlike Dan Gediman's misstatement in last weekend's "Bob Edwards Weekend."

I think it's interesting that they feel one of the problems is that

the original language [contains] terms underdeveloped to convey new concepts of Christianity

So these are people who don't believe we should hew to the original teachings? Isn't the fact that Christianity has developed and evolved over time to prerogative of liberals?
