GOD Hates The World.
You know, this *almost* seems like a parody, but I recognize enough of the Westboro crowd in it to know that it is serious:

Now, think about the theology behind this - it does explain the problem of evil - simply put, all evil is our own fault, because GOD hates us.
But leave that to the courtiers to thrash about. Just watch the video and you will see something much more interesting: the joy these people get out of this song. They love the idea that they're right and all the rest of us sinners are going to burn in the fires of hell for all eternity. That makes them more than special - it makes them triumphant, superior to even the other sects of Christianity. It's why they have that cute little girl at the end, spewing their hate.
And I think there - right there - is why religion has such a strong appeal to so many people. No, I'm not saying that all believers think that everyone else is going to burn in the fires of hell. But I am saying that the notion of being superior is at the heart of religion. Think about it, what could be more empowering than the idea that you - yes, YOU - are in a very special relationship with the Supreme Being.
No wonder the Westboro nuts drive all the mainstream Christians crazy - the raw revelation of what is at the heart of belief is extremely disturbing.

Having recently moved to Mississippi for work, I now reside in the 3rd circle of Hell. Honestly guys, it's not that bad - More of an annoyance than anything - It's like Maine with Baptist churches.

I realized that christianity isn't just the carrot of Heaven and the stick of Hell. A big part of the appeal isn't just the notion that you get to avoid Hell, but all those bad people out there who kicked sand in your face and lived it up are finally going to get theirs! Revenge fantasies are very potent.

Heh. Try the Religion chat rooms on Yahoo sometime. You'll be surprised at how often you'll see something like "When you atheists are all screaming in the flames of Hell, I'll sit up in Heaven watching and I'll just laugh and laugh."
I don't understand something...
According to the song, it's too late now, and God hates everyone and everyone is going to hell (except, presumably, the WBC crowd). So why are they still preaching? To gloat?
There's a part of the song where, in referencing our "proud sinning", someone says "so just stop it": why should we stop it if we won't change God's mind?
With their message of no hope and inevitable hell-fire, aren't they really responsible for there being even more sin in the world? Shame on them!
