"We should have the right to kill our children in this country."
Via PZ, news that the woman who prayed over her daughter while she was dieing from a treatable condition, rather than seeking basic medical care, has been found guilty of reckless homicide. From the news report:
Mother found guilty in Wausau prayer death case
Wausau - A jury Friday found a central Wisconsin mother guilty of killing her 11-year-old daughter by praying for her to heal instead of rushing her to a doctor.
A Marathon County jury deliberated about four hours before convicting Leilani Neumann, 41, of rural Weston of second-degree reckless homicide. No sentencing date was set. Neumann remains free on bond.
But of course the kooks who were behind this are still certain that they did the right thing in letting an 11 year old girl die:
Leilani Neumann's stepfather, Brian Gordon of San Diego, said he was disappointed by the verdict and the jury was mistaken. He said his stepdaughter did nothing wrong in trusting in God to heal her daughter.
"We should have that right in this country," he said.
Yeah, because it's OK to kill your children in the name of your god, isn't it?
Sheesh. I hope the rest of these idiots who are currently charged as accessories are also found guilty, the whole lot of them slammed behind bars for a couple of decades, and all of the money they have is squandered in pointless appeals. Maybe - just *maybe* - it will start to sink into their inordinately thick skulls that perhaps they were wrong.
Bastards.
Here - right here - is proof that religion is evil.

Letting the kids speak for themselves
Here is an article in which four children give their opinions about whether parents should be forced to obtain medical treatment for their children, or not.
Here's one that might come out the other way
The boy whose mother allegedly followed a Native American religion that relies upon "natural healing practices" has brought him home and the family is agreeing to pursue chemo and other treatment through an oncologist.
Too many dead children
This is hardly the first time a child has died because parents relied upon prayer instead of medicine - and it won't be the last. It's at least the fourth reported here in the last year. The ones who are the real criminals are the ones who preach that prayer is the only thing needed to treat these conditions, instead of letter children get medical help when it is required.
In a weekly discussion group in which I participate we were talking about life expectancy and pandemics. A couple people pointed out that life expectancy appears to be very low historically because it is skewed by all the children who didn't make it to their first or second birthday. One person noted that this is because many died from diseases against which children today are innoculated, such as diptheria and measles and mumps, just as Leilani Neumann's daughter died of diabetes. Much as it sounds callous, maybe these children dying is a way of thinning the herd - or at least making sure the nutcases don't have another generation into which to spread their fraudulent beliefs.
start timing
I am starting to think that whenever any of us posts something like this (which has been happening way too often), we should start a timer running to see how long it takes some Christian to come by and drop the "no true Christian" load of crap. You know, no true Scotsman but for deluded Christians.
Yes. In fact, it seems to
Yes. In fact, it seems to me that this is not just a case of the girl being a victim of parental neglect--the whole family, who probably genuinely loved this girl, and are honestly deeply grieved by her death, are victims of religion.
It's like it poisoned their brains or something.
