Just a quickie

I just want to point you folks to a new newsweek article. I read it and was a little blown away by the middle ground that the article takes.

*** edited to add. I think this is a good article and positive press for non-theists.

You can see it here.

We hate to say we told you so

From the article:

Let's be clear: while the percentage of Christians may be shrinking, rumors of the death of Christianity are greatly exaggerated. Being less Christian does not necessarily mean that America is post-Christian. A third of Americans say they are born again; this figure, along with the decline of politically moderate-to liberal mainline Protestants, led the ARIS authors to note that "these trends … suggest a movement towards more conservative beliefs and particularly to a more 'evangelical' outlook among Christians."

No. The movement exists only within the limits of the church, not in the general population.

What has happened is that the latest attempt by fundamentalism to subsume all other human endeavors has failed. Like its predecessors, the latest shills for the value of "managed belief" vs. "free thought" have run slap out of ideas and now have to resort to the same old siege mentality.

Many conservative Christians believe they have lost the battles over issues such as abortion, school prayer and even same-sex marriage, and that the country has now entered a post-Christian phase.

Welcome to reality, where all wills pass the same test.
