Often quoted as “Have you no shame, sir?” the historic line spoken to communist witch hunter Sen. Joe McCarthy by Army counsel Joseph N. Welch goes “Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”
That one speech reportedly marked a turning point in McCarthy’s career. His much heralded hearings, powered by fear of communist infiltration he himself helped create, had caught America by the throat. But in that moment, people suddenly saw him in a new light. He wasn’t America’s vigilant defender, he was a fear-mongering demagogue willing to do anything, willing to brand anyone, no matter how innocent, with the scarlet “C,” to bolster his own political career.
Welch also said “Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness.”
I hope we just had another of those moments.
A caller to Rush Limbaugh’s show, a self-described Republican and veteran, said:
... No matter what Obama does, you will still criticize him because I believe you are brainwashed. You're just – and I hate to say it – but I think you're a brainwashed Nazi. Anyone who can believe in torture has got to be – there has got to be something wrong with them.
And later:
We're not supposed to torture people. Do you remember World War II, the Nazis? The Nuremberg trials? What's the matter with you? You never even served in the military. I served in the Marine Corps and the Army.
You can read the text and hear the audio.

Rush and the Military
"We're not supposed to torture people. Do you remember World War II, the Nazis? The Nuremberg trials? What's the matter with you? You never even served in the military. I served in the Marine Corps and the Army."
I love that quote. The military gave financial contributions to Obama at a level of 6 to 1 compared to McCain.
One of the reasons (the gut moral inclination aside) military people don't approve of torture is that it is ineffective. The enemy is more likely to tell you what he thinks you want to hear than give the truth. Also if word leaks out, he is much more likely to fight to the death than surrender (increasing your own casualties).
According to the right-wing wingnuttery that can only mean one thing, "The troops hate the troops."
Rush, whose anal cyst made him four-f, now makes his living on his ass and he still likes to invoke his biggest weakness as a strength. Very much reminiscent of "tail gunner Joe."
Maybe they'll notice how
Maybe they'll notice how Rush goes from blaming the guy for Obama getting elected (and missing his point about how "Project Chaos" probably had more to do with it anyway) to denigrating him as the kind of republican "our last candidate attracted."
Those poor right-wingers can't keep straight who they're supposed to hate more: Obama and his supporters; the people who voted against McCain; or the people who voted for him.

Well...what the fuck do you know!
Part of me says "better late than never", and part of me says "IT'S ABOUT GODDAMNED TIME!!!"
I realize that many hardworking, over-taxed Americans don't like paying for the social programs that Democrats sometimes put forward, or are too blinded by their superstitions to embrace liberal secularism, but the Republican party has been a morally bankrupt den of bigots, thieves, theocrats and war profiteers since before I was born(1973.) Despite all their rhetoric about smaller government, lower taxes, and individual rights, I've never once seen a Republican stand up for ANY of these things in practice. They don't even lower taxes for anyone who isn't already rich, and never have. They just take the working citizens' money to spend on war machines and corporate welfare to enrich themselves at our (and the rest of the world's)expense.
I guess what I'm getting at is that as far as I've ever seen, people like Rush Limbaugh(and Bush Jr. and Ann Coulter for that matter) ARE the Republican party- its very heart and soul, and have been for decades...at least since the 60's, when the civil rights movements on the left turned many southern whites into Republicans so they could keep their unearned privileges.
I wonder what mythical "Republican party" this caller has been voting for all this time- most loyal republican voters I've known are just like their dear leaders-close minded, fearful, paranoid, bigoted, bullying, freedom-hating, prison-loving, torture-loving, war loving, potentially genocidal, and profoundly, proudly ignorant. Looking at the history from Nixon to Bush, and every Republican governor and congressman I have ever heard speak in over thirty years, the party of the Rush Limbaughs and Ann Coulters and Jerry Falwells is the only Republican party I have ever known.
If this guy wants to help show up the hypocrisy and start changing all that then I'm all for it, but I think he'd have a better chance at getting Democrats to embrace war-for-profit and give up on social justice. After decades of being called loonies, commies, and traitors just for having a shred of conscience and moral decency, many Democrats these days are already more than halfway to right-wing fascism already.
Enough ranting on the past. While I doubt it very much, maybe people like this are the future of the Republican party...maybe...but if he's been voting for them the whole time, and the only thing that's bothered him is one loudmouthed idiot encouraging torture, who gives a shit? Genocide, fascism and police states are still genocide, fascism, and police states even without the torture...anyway, here's to hoping that someday basic decency will become a contagious condition.
