A New Direction for this country, and for the Republicans...
First, I thank everyone who stood up and made their voice heard on Tuesday, regardless of who you voted for.
I am sure that all of you share my glee over the election results. It has renewed my faith that our system can actually work sometimes. We all know that this is no miracle cure or that is going to make everything better, but at the bare minimum the American people were able to voice their opinion loud and clear, despite the best efforts of the Republican spin machine.
Of course, we all know that Bush and the remaining Republicans must publicly attempt to work with the Democrats, and Rumsfeld's resignation and Bush's breakfast with Nancy Pelosi bear that out. However, I do not believe that the Republican Party is going to take this is the wake-up call that they need to change the way they do business. Rather, I think that that is going to be a signal to them that they need to redouble their efforts to slander Democrats, force partisanship, and make sure they win back control in 2008 so they can continue their work of making this a Christian nation.
To me, these election results are just the start of the battle. I am sure that the Republican Party is going to review everything and try to come up with a new election strategy for 2008, while we try and fix all the problems that they caused in the 12 years they've run Congress. I do not believe that any conciliatory tones are genuine, or that any real effort towards bipartisanship will take place. I cannot see how a party who so viciously and aggressively fought to suppress any opposing opinions can now suddenly want to work together as a team. The change is too abrupt for me to consider valid.
I honestly and truly hope that I am wrong. I hope that the Republicans can start to dismantle this infrastructure of slander, partisanship and manipulation. We need strong parties with a strong presence and strong opinions, but these parties need to work together and need to compromise, which is something that the Republicans have not been very good at recently.
At least now we have some hope.

I agree with it.
Progress!
This was probably the best 0ff-Year election in my lifetime! Woohoo!!!
Thing is though, don't let Shrub's conciliatory demeanor belie the fact that his freakshow is gonna continue to Stay the Course.
Rumsfeld's gone?!?!
Well, sort of...
And frankly, if it weren't all the more folks who're gonna lose limbs/lives and property, many at the - let's face it - Tied Hands of the US Military, I'd be happy as hekk to watch BushCo continue down it's historical cul-de-sac of a path.
2 bits says we're (the US) in Iraq 'til '08.

But at least for now, it's still time to Celebrate this election!!!

One of the things that has been said is that quite often the party with the most money gets all the votes. Not only that but the smaller parties really aren't given equal representation within political debates (when's the last time you saw a presidential candidate debate who wasn't either a dem or a rep?). Personally I think that some of the tax money should go to a fund that then gets divided up amongst the candidates, equally. That way big buisness wouldn't be able to buy candidates with promises of power in exchange for loyalty.
I'm with you...
I also hope the Republicans will dismantle their sleaze and corruption machine. I happen to believe there are still some honorable, principled R's out there, and they are starting to make their voices heard.(For example Pete McCloskey, who helped oust the incredibly extremist and anti-environment Dick Pombo from Congress. I happened to hear him being interviewed on the radio tonight and was very impressed.)
The Christian-dominionist-cronyist-neonazicon wing of the Republican party are parasites. They've hijacked Christianity, hijacked the concept of patriotism, hijacked conservatism and turned it into a crazed, fascist version of what it should be. And they've also hijacked the GOP, turning it from the party of Lincoln into the party of DeLay, Foley, Haggard, Santorum, Randy Cunningham, etc. etc. They are beyond redemption - it's up to the old-style Republicans, who have kept a low profile over the last few years, to cut out the cancer, take their party back and restore its honor.
Though I'm a liberal and proud of it, if the last six years have taught us anything, it's that one-party rule is a very bad thing. We need two (or more) strong, vibrant, and most of all principled and honest parties to act as checks and balances on each other and to prevent extremism from getting out of hand.
I don't see the current GOP leadership changing its spots any time soon - I'm sure they're already plotting to begin a campaign of obstruction and sabotage against the Dem majority that will make their Clinton-era shenanigans look like boy scout stuff. We must hope for a major purge and new leadership on the Republican side of the aisle.
