Observations and inanities by a second-shift assistant supervisor in the Puppy-Grinding division of the Evil Atheist Conspiracy® (our motto: "Sure it's cruel, but think of the jobs!"), your host, Brent Rasmussen.
If PZ said it, it must be true...
PZ had a nice piece about "Which Science Fiction author are you?" My result:
![]() |
I am:Hal Clement (Harry C. Stubbs) A quiet and underrated master of "hard science" fiction who, among other things, foresaw integrated circuits back in the 1940s. |
Which really isn't a bad fit, given the style of my own writing, in which I stipulate what the future of computers includes...
So, who're you?
Jim Downey

For me
I'm suprised that I didn't get RAH too...instead I got Isaac Asimov.
Hey, don't feel too bad.
Hey, don't feel too bad. Asimov is very good, as would be Clarke. I wouldn't be humiliated to get either, as they probably rank 2 and 3 behind Heinlein. But I WANTED Heinlein, dammit!!! I didn't even get Isaac or Arthur. That's humiliation. I'm going to crawl back into my hole now. I think the test was rigged!

Cordwainer Smith
Cordwainer Smith (Paul M.A. Linebarger)
This inimitably unique storyteller created a future with so many deep layers of history that all the world we know is practically lost in it.
Cool. I like worldbuilders so this guy seems perfect for me.
Me too
I got this guy too. I'm surprised I haven't heard of him before. Can anyone give me a review?
Mandy U
I got H. G. Wells
I wanted to get George Orwell or Aldous Huxley, but H. G. Wells isn't that bad. If he hadn't written The Time Machine, Tom Cruise would've just ruined another book.
Damn! I got Greg Binford,
Damn! I got Greg Binford, or something like that. Isn't that the guy who sponsored "Tool Time"?
Curse you, Brent, I was supposed to get R.A.H.!!!!
I even went back and changed some of my answere. Then I got Ayn Rand. AAAAAGH!! It's lies! All LIES!!

Hey!
Where can I get a look at the original picture from which your gravatar comes?
If I remember correctly, I
If I remember correctly, I got from a site called "Brawl-Hall".
Heres the URL: http://brawl-hall.com/pages/
On the left sidebar, under 'Gallery', there's a link for 'avatars'. I'm pretty sure that's where I pulled it from. I have no idea where you could find the original pic, though.
I've got a question for you, too.(Or anybody else here who knows) How do I post and have my signature line (One man's theology....) show up at the bottom in italics? Whenever I move it down to post above it, it shows up in normal type. This time, I started typing in front of it, but it still showed up in normal type when I previewed my post. What's the secret that I don't know?

Signatures
I took the liberty of adding your signature to the "Signature" portion of your user profile. Now it will be automagically added to every one of your comments - from this point forward. Please note that it will not add your signature retroactively to your past comments. Sorry about that! :) I'm running the most recent version of Drupal, which means that some of the cool modules like the "Signature Module" that used to work on the older versions of drupal don't work on this newest version yet.
Also, when using HTML, try to use the "quicktags" icons above the text box. Select the text that you wish to make bold, for example, and then click the "B" (bold) quicktag icon. This will surround the text with the proper HTML, <strong></strong>, instead of the old, deprecated <b></b> tags. In the case of italics, the <em></em> tags are preferred to the obsolete <i></i> tags. Let the quicktags icons do all the work!
I'm Isaac Asimov!
My first ever favourite science fiction writer... For about 2 months, until I discovered Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, and Ursula LeGuin, and - the list goes on :) But Asimov was my first love, so to speak!
As for me ...
I got Kurt Vonnegut.
Although I feel more like a Terry Pratchett.
I've always had...
...a warm spot in my heart for Kurt - probably because he is so fond of Twain.

Not Suprising
Not surprisingly, I got R.A.H.:
Beginning with technological action stories and progressing to epics with religious overtones, this take-no-prisoners writer racked up some huge sales numbers.
Which science fiction writer are you?
Yeah...
...I'm not sure whether I am just not enough of a curmudgeon, or not enough of a libertarian, but I didn't make the cut. *sigh*

I got Hal Clement
Have read some short stories, and liked them. But no novels. Hmm.
Trying to remember...
...his stuff, may need to do a bit of research. But I read a *lot* of SF for about 15 years, and authors tended to blur together...

Olaf who?
I got this guy:
Standing outside the science fiction "field", he wrote fictional explorations of the futures of whole species and galaxies.
Which science fiction writer are you?
No idea who this guy is.

- Me
Looks nothing like your picture.
I can't recall hearing of him, either, Sporkyy.

Are you guys kidding?
Olaf Stapledon wrote "Last and First Men" and "The Star Maker" which are classics of visionary science fiction and have plots spanning billions of years and dealing with fundamental themes of what is ultimate reality. He also inspired the idea of Dyson spheres and anticipated terraforming, transhumanism and genetic engineering. Damn, I wish I'd gotten him! I got James Tiptree Jr. whom I'd never heard of, but who turned out to be a woman, and a bisexual one at that.
- No More Mr. Nice Guy!
Doh!
Thanks NMMNG - like I said below, I went through an intense period of devouring SF, and at the time wasn't paying as much attention to authors as I came to do later. You helped pull out the work.

people
I agree with it.
