Dizziness and fainting...or cervical cancer

Merck is in the spotlight again. Here we go...PREVENTABLE CANCER!! How long have we been waiting for something like this? Wait, we wouldn't want to encourage young girls to get this vaccine. They will probably go have sex then. We can't encourage 11 and 12 year olds to have SEX! We have to stop this lobbying effort.

This popped right up on my radar since I'm in the middle of a Food and Drug Law class and just last night we went over what drug manufacturers can and can't do to promote the use of their drugs (and all of the gray area in between). This is an approved, licensed, labeled use of the drug so the first amendment right should apply and this lobbying should be allowed. I'm not sure why everyone in the article is suspicious of the timing of this action. The vaccine is approved! Why not make money and protect women from cervical cancer? I also find it frustrating that the interviewees are worried and question "whether the vaccine was tested in enough young girls". It did have to go through extensive clinical trials to be approved for use. If they are pushing for young girls to be vaccinated, then they are the target population that was tested in Phase III trials. I'd be willing to bet that there weren't many people concerned about additional testing of the statin drugs

Perry's choice.

Yes, I was amazed by Rick Perry's pro-vac position. I guess Merck's money is worth more to him than the fundies' votes. Or perhaps he just recognized what was right and stood up for it. Or maybe he just saw how the Progressive-era Rebublican style is working for Arnold in California and decided to build a legacy in Texas that will win the respect of its emerging blue majority.

Amazing

I am constantly amazed at the abject stupidity of some, mostly xtians. I should not be, but I am. How batshit crazy does one have to be to deny a vaccine to precious children that can prevent this terrible cancer? Anyway, thank you for this very nice article and the links. I was not aware that testing for boys was so far along. Great! I have two horses in this race, a granddaughter and a grandson. And they both thank you also.

Amen, Trailrider.

Yeah, Mandy, I've been following this issue for a while now. The Gov. of Texas just came out last week saying that all girls in the state should be vaccinated as part of their school shots. And of course he's catching grief from the fundies about it...
