The voice of Christian love & tolerance.

Jim Downey's picture

So, there I was, calmly running through the comments on the Time blog about the new 'documentary' that James Cameron is working on, enjoying the back and forth between the believers and us heathens, when I came across this gem of a comment from one of the Christians:

God has no use for someone who refuses to believe in Him. God created humanity to serve Him. We are not to live a self-serving life. So those who do not commit themselves to Him are evil and will suffer eternal damnation - like it or not. It doesn't matter what you do, it is what you believe that will either save you are damn you.

Ah, the perfect example of Christain love and tolerance.

So, how long until someone posts here saying "That's not a true Christian..."?

Jesus was a Secular Humanist Liberal Hippie

...so, yeah, he's not a real Christian. And here's some great ammunition I stumbled across a few days ago that you may find entertaining and useful.

I would avoid trolling the

I would avoid trolling the comments section for material.

A hallmark of idiocy

Leave that to the right wing.

Valid complaint.

That would be a valid complaint, were I trying to impugn the Time website with the comments. As it was, and I think I made this reasonably clear, I was pointing to that strain of Christian thinking which manifests itself on a variety of sites, indicating how a certain subset thinks of the relationship of man to their God.

Wow....

Wow, this person must read the bible everyday and go to church everyday I bet. He/she probably doesn't even go to the bathroom or even hae sex :o! WOW this person must be the perfect christian! What's funny is that, in the end after you die you're still gonna go to hell. It's said in the bible if someone wants to recheck if I'm correct or not. "Revelation 2:10Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life." And who the hell know's who wrote the bible? There's like so many freaking ones out there, which I don't know what the difference is or why are there so many different types of authors for them! In the end, it's reincarnation lol and tolerance HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA.

Slaves of "God"?

Tantamount to being slaves of "God"?

slavery

You know, this reminds me of my variant alien arguement for religion. Aliens come down, create a false god that must be obeyed absolutely or we're damned to eternal damnation, and that it is the civic duty of all true believers to make sure everyone else is a true believer. For punishment all "nonbelievers" are to be killed in an excrutiatingly painful/humiliating fashion (like, being crucified, oh wait, that would put them next to Jesus). With these goals in mind humanity eventually wipes out the free-thinkers that would try to rebel against their "masters" and is left with only good little children anxious to please despite the fact that they get no meaningful phyiscal reward, who never question what they are told or why they are told it (kill my kids? fine, always for you, master). Sounds like an ideal slave race to me. Just keep up the illusion that they are doing things for "god" with an occasional miracle that's really very easy for a species advanced enough to make the journey to earth.

Children

It's always seemed to me that that's why a lot of people have children...to finally have somebody notice them, to be "worshiped" in a small way as a lifegiver...at least until the kid becomes a teenager, starts to rebel, and you want to "kill'em". To translate that need-to-be-noticed to a god and make it the reason for your own existence - that god needed attention - is just bizarre. I see no need for anything but natural processes, but if there IS something out there that someone else might call God - with a capital G - we certainly don't give it much credit, but instead personify it as a big, selfish, intolerant xenophobe. Eternal damnation no less! 40 all too short years of adult life against ETERNITY?

Sounds Familiar.....

This is exactly the type of rhetoric that fuels genocide, holy wars and many other unspeakable acts committed by people against one another.

What is truly insidious about what is going on today is that the public face of Christianity preaches tolerance, love and acceptance of all. But the teachings of the Church include an addendum; tolerance, love and acceptance for all Christians. Those who are not Christians must either be converted or discarded. What is meant by 'discarded' depends on the Christian, and it can range from social isolation to execution.

This quote reminds me of another quote;

"I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord's work." [Adolph Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936]

Oh he's a true Christian.

Oh he's a true Christian. He's right isn't he? I mean you can't expect God to give a shit about people (which of course means that he's positively unable to avoid sending them to Hell) if they don't have the common decency to BELIEVE in Him and WORSHIP Him and grovel before him when he went to all the trouble to CREATE them can you?
