at a loss for words

My niece is on a rampage over the treatment, or lack thereof, that our Iraq veterans are receiving. She sent me the following email...

There are no words to describe these photos. They both break your heart and give you hope.

I hesitated to pass on this link because the photos are so shocking. But this young man and his bride have nothing to be embarrassed about. There are plenty of people in high places who should be ashamed. But these two are not among them.

and I am at a loss for words.

I don't understand

I'm not making a point, I'm just saying I don't understand.

I don't understand how someone who has been so badly reduced at the most basic biological level, disfigured, whatever you want to call it, can still wear the uniform of the system that produced that disfigurement.

It's time the good guys stood up to the madmen and made ourselves heard. War is so wrong.

Loyalty

First, there's a fierce sense of loyalty in the USMC.

Second, the Marine Corps did not injure that man. Our gov't put our soldiers and Marines in the position to be injured. It's perfectly reasonable for the man to still love the Corps. I'm glad he's still proud to have been a Marine.

I appreciate that perspective.

Thanks, Rick. I came of age shortly after the end of the last draft - though had friends who went and were killed in Nam. In the aftermath of that debacle, I had no interest in serving. So, I appreciate your perspective as someone who has, and who can differentiate between the loyalty owed to your brethern Marines & service to the country on the one side, and the foolishness of the people who sent them into harm's way on the other.

The only appropriate response...

...is to cry, cry for what we have allowed to be done in our name.
