"I believe in UFO's because I've seen one." -Dennis Kucinich
Okay, sorry if I am offending any UFO believers that read UTI, but I think Dennis Kucinich is just as big a kook as Falwell, Robertson or any of the other creation fundies we normally make fun of. I just finished watching the Dem presidential debate on MSNBC and am dumbfounded. Kucinich raised his hand when all candidates were asked if anyone believes in UFO's. (rolls eyes)
The moderators (Tim Russert & Brian Williams) specifically asked Kucinich if he believes in UFO's and Kucinich said "Yes. I believe in UFO's because I have seen one." No kidding. Those were his exact words. I'm disappointed. I like Kucinich, but I can no longer take this guy seriously. This really sucks because Kucinich is the only one with enough balls to stand up and call for the Iraq war to be defunded and for the US to move to a single payer health care system.
The debate was pretty good in general. As a tentative Obama fan, I think he won, but that's just my biased opinion. I was worried that Obama would wimp out again because a few days ago he said he was really going to start going after Hillary. He attacked Hillary for "obfuscating."(lol) Wow, that's really getting tough! Note to Obama, use words the general public is familiar with.
I am not a big Hillary fan so I was happy to see Obama, Edwards and a few others go after her for her tendency to equivocate and they nailed her on her Iraq war stance. Clinton also made what I consider to be a big mistake. She says she agrees with the Gov. of New York, Elliot Spitzer in his decision to give illegal immigrants drivers licenses. The Republicans are going to scream bloody murder about this one.
Hey Brent, it's time for a new poll. I would be curious to see who UTIers favor for president. Personally, I like Obama, but I also think Edwards and Dodd are much better than Hillary. Obviously, I am in the minority according to national poll numbers. Richardson is okay, but he was kind of a twit tonight. He defended Hillary and sounded more like a guy who wants a cushy job in her administration than a presidential candidate in his own right. Oh, and in the debate wrap-up afterwards Richardson defended Kucinich about UFO's. Richardson talked about the government keeping Area 51 secret and wondered openly if UFO's weren't a real phenomena.
I think most folks here at UTI are atheists or agnostics, but I would be curious to hear if anyone has other supernatural beliefs. Does anyone here believe in UFO's, Sasqautch, witchcraft, astrology, ghosts, superstitions, voodoo, luck, karma, magic, curses, etc...? I am fascinated by supernatural beliefs although I hold none of my own. Throughout history, man has continuously found natural explanations for what had previously been considered supernatural phenomena. Never has human knowledge gone from natural to supernatural. Science always wins. I wonder how religiots rationalize this fact?

New knowledge - SHC

Cells versus capacitors
During the experiments regarding cells and capacitors, we have seen yet unpublished properties, which could explain phenomena that have been thought of as mysteries till now. These could show many other solutions. Because there are new terms used in the results I will try to demonstrate these new findings on three natural phenomena.
On cellular membranes, there is spontaneus transformation of cosmic energy into electric energy if they are located in energetic overcharge in the same way as on the electrodes of capacitors. If two or more auras of matters are interconnected their auras merge into a bigger common aura and then their energetic values are equalised.
If we think about the human body according to the new knowledge, we could say that bilions of cells are in contact and their auras overlap, which means that the whole body has a common aura. This phenomenon works not only in between the human cells but also in electronics. The memory of a computer comprises of a great amount of miniature condensers and is able to store information in the form of 0’s and 1’s (0 = there is no charge, 1 = there is charge). Therefore, we could say that human body and electronics have some similar properties. This tells us that if the charge is increased it could cause harm not only to cells in the human body but also to electronics (this could be proved by some simple experiments).
According to the procedure that I’m describing in the article “Dowsing versus aura” it is easy to prove the reactions of energetic parts of water flows (aura, zones, interzones). By this we get an idea about the energy of small water flows and we could orientate in the energetic properties of great water flows more easily. By this I mean sea currents. There are many of these and their flow is in the order of hundreds of millions m3/sec and it could be assumed that they are in interaction with large streams around the Earth. The Gulf stream has various bends and meanders where there is multiple energetic concentration. In the Sargas sea there are also whirlpools whose diameter reaches up to 300km and they reach depth of 5000m. These further increase the local energetic concentration. These places could be thought of as critical from the point of view of further energetic increase from other sources, which could be thunderstorm clouds, moon, planets and other sources. Also, the planes that have been lost in this area could have connection with energetic overvoltage.
The zones of the Gulf stream copy in the shapes of cylindrical shells the US East coast. The energy of one of these zones could be artificially significantly increased by the use of groups of great capacitance capacitors and this would create a barrier that would destroy all organisms and electronics. However, there is a great amount of sea currents and this gives us the opportunity to built such a barrier anywhere on the Earth. This piece of knowledge could also be used for other purposes.
This knowledge about the energetic overvoltage of cells could also explain a strange phenomenon that occurred in the streets of capital of Nairobi on 24.July 1956 at 15:00 (03:00p.m.). About 200 men and women danced on the main street in Nairobi. The dancing people had a regretful look in their faces such as if they danced because they were forced to dance. It wasn’t possible to communicate with them and they didn’t perceive anyone who asked them a question. One hour later, there were 20.000 men, women and children dancing. Eventually, there were about 50.000 people dancing in a strict circle whose diameter was 3.5 kilometres. It looked like they weren’t perceiving anything but they kept about a metre of space between them and they didn’t bump into anyone. It’s interesting that even older people could dance in this dancing marathon for about 5 hours without any visible signs of getting tired. Later accounts of the dancing showed that they didn’t remember anything because their sences were totally crippled. Their memory and thinking didn’t work. It’s very interesting that even that there was no music playing with this dance all the dancers kept the same rhytm.
In this magic circle, not all the people were dancing. The dancers were those who had some metal objects such as coins in their pockets. The dance participants later realised a feeling that their body gained energy from these metal objects. Everything suddenly ended =at 20:00 (08:00p.m.). Nobody has been hurt or dead. This is a very rare phenomenon, which was also noted with some differences in Rheinland at spring equinox in 1374. Between 1871 – 1878 in the Savoy there was an epidemic obsession in women monasteries that was changing into diabolic feakout. The cause of these incomprehensible events hasn’t been found yet.
The knowledge of the empiric research also gives us an explanation of this mysterious event. People that were affected by the dance were located in the energetic space of the town that had greater energetic overcharge than the optimal cellular charge. This caused greater charge on the cells (including brains cells) and was followed by disorder of thinking. The fact that is peculiar on this event is that even older people didn’t feel tired after 5 hours long dancing. Not less interesting is the information that only those people that had metal objects in their pockets were affected by the dance. Three great time intervals between similar events show that the energetic overcharge could be caused by astronomical influences. I don’t doubt that similar anomalies in the region of aura could also be created by groups of great capacitance capacitors, which would create optimally enhanced overcharge in this given region. We noticed similar health disorders during the experimetns, but we interrupted such experiments due to the possibility of health damage. The fact that similar situation can’t be evoked by the people that don’t have metal with them prompts us to many useful applications. Bank robbers usually have metal objects with them, but bank workers don’t, so a button could be pressed and the bank robbers would give us a dance before the police arrives. There are many other such applications.
Another mysterious event, which could be assigned to the zones of the cosmic energy is the spontane human combustion (SHC). The spontane human combustion is one of the most controversial phenomena for serious researchers. The spontane combustion means that human body could be ignited without any optically noticed source. Very intense and unbelievably localised fire transforms most of the human body into ash. In many cases part of a limb, like a leg, remains untouched. Similarly, some parts of clothes or surrounding objects remain untouched. Nothing similar exists in nature that would be similar to those fires and the accompanying phenomena don’t follow laws of physics and findings of medicine. Some researchers also describe this phenomenon by “candlewick effect”. They wrap a body of a pig into a sheet and leave it slowly burning all day. They forget about the fact that the process of burning during SHC happenes in a matters of seconds, not hours. There is a great amount of information about this phenomenon on the internet and therefore I won’t further describe it, but will limit myself only to the classification from our research’s point of view.
Cellular membranes have a capacity of about (1µF/cm2), which means that they work like a capacitor. If we keep increasing the charge on a capacitor after reaching the threshold value, which is the maximum value up to which it’s sized, the isolator would eventually brake and in that moment, all the energy is released and the capacitor is destoryed. Similar disastrous process happens with billions of cells in humans. When the threshold energetic value for which nature sized our cells is reached, the cells explode in the same way as capacitors do.
I have written about three different phenomena, which by their specific show confirm functionality of other properties of cells and condensers. I would be delighted if some research centers used this new knowledge.

Shallow Thoughts
I watched the debate. His explanation was that he didn't know what it was, it was unidentified. He made a joke about moving his campaign headquarters to Roswell. I believe it's a non-issue, but who knows.
Are UFOs piloted by Catholic priests from another planet?
Simply seeing a UFO doesn't register as kooky with me. It really just means an Unidentified Flying Object. I don't start getting worried until someone starts talking about the origin of the UFO or talking about why the UFO was here. I don't really see spacecraft from another planet being equipped with technology that enables travel at superluminal speeds having cloaking technology so poor that lets them be seen by people whose credibility as eyewitnesses was established by one appearance on TV describing how the tornado sounded coming through their trailer park. UFOs coming from another dimension seems less probable than ones from another planet because at least other planets have been discovered. There are preliminary indications that other planets have, or at least had, life as well. That the extraterrestrials can come to earth, park their craft above a home, levitate out an occupant, molest them and then put them back without the neighbors noticing seems unlikely since all they have to do is simply fly over a trailer park and have no less than 20 people see them. A related idea that they are collecting cow anuses seems even less likely. The hollow earth thing is just silly.
So until Kucinich elaborates on what he thinks he saw or why he thinks they are here, I can't make any reasonable judgments.
Do I believe in any of the above? No. I had a phase when I was younger where I read everything I could about UFOs, the Loch Ness monster, ghosts, Sasquatch, the Bermuda triangle, the Winchester House, randomly appearing portals to different time periods, spontaneous human combustion, dinosaurs living in the Amazon basin, the face on Mars, stigmata, psychokinesis, telepathy, reincarnation, miracles, etc. I hit puberty and realized that the world just wasn't cool enough to have any of that stuff be real. The evidence just wasn't there for any of it. The arguments against them were more plausible than any of the arguments for them. You need a breeding population of Nessies, Sasquatches, dinosaurs, etc. The superstructure that NASA doesn't want you to know about is just a trick of light, shadows and poor resolution image. There isn't really any good working hypothesis of how psychic abilities are supposed to work. You get the idea.
The more I read the more the claims started contradicting themselves. Where do UFOs come from? Space, parallel dimensions, the hollow earth or even from a future time period? It wasn't impossible that it was all 4, but the absurdities just compounded themselves. And with no evidence to back any of it up, I eventually gave up trying to figure out what was most probable. I applied the same sort of logic to everything else paranormal.
Off the topic of Kucinich, but on the topic of UFOs: has anyone else seen the stories on these drones and the supposed technology behind them?

can you at least admit that
can you at least admit that it was a profoundly naive thing to say at a national debate? and therefore, by another route, a reason to dismiss him?
Depressing
Well, the good thing about Kucinich is everything he's been saying about Iraq and Iran is true and right.
The bad thing is now he'll be portrayed as a lunatic. End of story.
I like Obama but he seems determined not to be elected
Making points about flag-pin wearing and such is just a waste of political capital. He should be frying bigger fish.
I would sum up UFO's as:
- Almost certainly there would be alien civilizations somewhere
- Chances they've visited here during my lifetime? Nil.
- Chances aliens would disembowell cows and tromp patterns into our crops? Even less.
- Of course we will see weird stuff up in the sky. Doesn't mean much.
UFO's aren't supernatural
Who says UFOs are supernatural? It's possible that a UFO is of earthly origin -- perfectly natural. Or that it's of extra-terrestrial origin yet perfectly natural. I've never seen one and I do believe much talk in this area is bogus fantasy or even superstition. But I can't reject someone out of hand for saying he believes in UFOs as I might if they say they saw a leprechaun.
I sort of enjoyed the debates but after a while it started making me gag. I don't like Clinton or Obama. Edwards, Dodd or Kucinich are more likely to say what I want to hear. Biden does not say what I want to hear but I kind of admire his frankness and confidence. I'll vote in the primary but have not decided who for.
In Dennis' defense
He did emphasize that UFO stood for unidentified flying object. On the other hand, he hangs around John Hagelin and the kooks at the Maharishi Institute in Fairfield, IA. He's nuttier than a can of Planter's peanuts, but no worse than folks like Obama and Clinton who keep slapping a yet another coat of Jesus semigloss on their rhetoric.
Supreme Court
Hi Todd-
I just wanted to let you know that I think we agree on most things, but this might not be one. First, I am a skeptic of all things supernatural. Second I am an atheist because one of those supernatural things I don't believe in is gord-the-lord. Yes Clinton, Obama and Edwards talk way too much about their faith, but I have a suspicion that it is just empty rhetoric necessary to win the election. I see them trying to out god each other, but I think that reflects more on the fact that the US is as much as 85% christian if you believe the polls. The pandering is just a necessary evil, I hope.
I don't want a guy like Kucinich making me look like a kook at the same time I am criticizing Republicans for not believing in evolution. It feels hypocritical to me. I hope that the Dems can position themselves as the party of science. I think the Dems us science as a code word for rationalism.
The Republicans have their own code words. When they say "strict constructionalist" judges, they mean religious fundies. I am not a Hillary fan, but I will vote for any D over any R because of who they will appoint to the Supreme Court. One more Thomas, Scalia or Alito will turn this country into a theocracy.
Here is a great video from Richard Dawkins' website. It's of a guy named Eddie Tabash talking about the politics of atheism at a Atheist Alliance International '07 meeting. It's kind of long (43 minutes), but well worth it if you have the time.
Edward Tabash on Point of Inquiry
He (Edward Tabash) was on Point of Inquiry, the official radio show and podcast of the Center for Inquiry, two weeks ago. I hadn't really heard of him before, but he made cogent enough arguments about what he believed. His story was a little like mine where he tried to make his life more interesting by finding something supernatural or transcendental to inject into it. Until he finally gave up and embraced reality for what it was and became all the more happy for it.

I'm not advocating any candidate... yet
Just want to clarify that I am not advocating any candidate at this point. I'm leaning towards Edwards and Dodd, but beyond that I stand firmly in the uncommitted category. The religious pandering bugs the crap out of me, but it won't stop me from voting for anyone with D after their name. Kucinich, however, has worked too closely with the Natural Law party to ever get more than a cursory look from me, which is amusing because I'm probably a bit to the left of him as far as politics go.
Aside from Kucinich, the other candidate that doesn't sit well with me is Obama. He's just a bit too willing to associate with uber creeps like Rick Warren to convince me that he is serious about separation of church and state. But if he's the eventual nominee, he'll get my vote. Where else am I going to go?
Many times...
...in the past I've been tempted to get into politics. Each time I concluded that I was not willing to do what was necessary, say what was necessary, just in order to get elected. Because this:
...is the crux of the problem. Just because it is a necessary evil doesn't make it not-evil.
Yes, I will likely vote for whomever is the Dem candidate for President in '08, if the race is in any way close, for the reasons you cite. But if the race isn't going to be particularly close, or not close in my state, I would have a very hard time voting for either of the two current front runners. One, I don't like dynasties, and "Bush-Clinton-Clinton-Bush-Bush-Clinton..." strikes me as being very bad for our republic. Two, Obama's willingness to tolerate a gay-hating-fundie as part of his 'outreach' to the black religious community is disgusting.

I believe...
in UFO's only to the extent that you can see things flying in the sky and not know what they are. I think it's improbable that we're regularly visited by aliens.
Flying saucers
Re UFOs. I would have to say that although I havent seen one myself*, I consider the existence of UFOs within the realm of the natural, and is therefore capable of being investigated objectively. There are just too many sightings to ignore and is therefore worthy of an unbiased investigation. I notice that in the US, there is a tendency to dismiss such sightings or evidence and stigmatize those who claim to have been abducted, even though these 'abductees' need help and compassion. In China, UFO research holds no such stigma, probably because they do not have a Western scientific tradition.
So yeah, list me under the UFO column. The Universe is just so vast that it would be arrogant to think that we're the only intelligence here.
-----
*I have this memory of having seen one when I was a kid, but Im not sure if it was a real memory or a dream I had.
slight of hand
not believing any reported "UFO" (alien) sightings are true is a FAR cry from saying we are alone. an assumptive leap you should probably not take.
kind of like "a bunch of people said it so there must be something to it". like nessie. or bigfoot. it's not that easy. you can see a weather balloon and report a UFO. you certainly saw "something". you're just too intellectually lazy to try and figure out what it really was. so you call it a UFO and get some moderate fame out of it.
also: a lot of chinese believe in accupuncture.
Presidential Candidate
Ron Paul intrigues me... his religious views and some of his social stances I don't agree with, but he is someone who has proven to stay true to his own views and go against the party line (including voting against the Iraq resolution)... so as much as I don't agree with him on everything that he isn't just another stooge sure sets him apart from anyone else I see running for either party. He's something of a libertarian, definitely doesn't hurt him in my books.
"something"
from what i've read... he doesn't believe in the separation of church and state. which is a bit odd for such a "libertarian"...
Like I said, I don't agree
Like I said, I don't agree with everything he stands for... but that doesn't seem to be one of his foremost platforms
Can't vote for Kucinich
Maybe he meant it literally? He saw something he has yet to explain (hence, a truly unidentified flying object) but he doesn't necessarily believe it was aliens from outer space. Regardless, I can't vote for the guy, not because of UFOs, but because he is sixty one and is married to a woman who is half his age (30). Ya, I know, I'm supposed to be giving him a virtual high five for tapping that hot young ass! Forget it. He's grandfather married and he's married to someone who should be hanging out with his daughter. We all know why young attractive women marry rich, powerful older men. So why do those men marry them? I think we all know the reason as well and it doesn't make me think very highly of either of them.
