Your tax dollars at work.

Jim Downey's picture

So. Would you be at all surprised to find out that over the last 50 years your tax dollars have gone to support such things as remote viewing, spoon bending, even attempts to walk through walls or kill with a thought?

Probably not, if you've been paying attention to what your government has been up to, and the strangeness that surrounds any authoritarian organization such as the US military and (so-called) intelligence agencies. But to see it all nicely wrapped up in three one-hour long programs for the UK Channel 4 is something else altogether. From the Google video site hosting the programs:

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Three years in the making, Jon Ronson’s Crazy Rulers of the World explores the apparent madness at the heart ... all » of US military intelligence.

With first-hand access to the leading players in the story, Jon Ronson examines the extraordinary - and plain bizarre - national secrets at the core of George W Bush's war on terror.

The first episode talks mostly about the origins of the military's interest in 'new age' mysticism, the whole First Earth Battalion stuff. You may think that this is a joke, but I remember in the mid 80's being shown (by a buddy in military intelligence) the original Army publication which talked about a "Project Jedi" which was designed to develop something akin to a psychic superman. The notion was that so-called psychic abilities would allow the US military to triumph with a minimum use of physical force. The three-part series then goes on to explore how these ideas were further developed and lead to some of the worst debacles of the Iraq War, not to mention ongoing efforts to use psychic abilities within the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

Nutty? You bet. But for people who think that we're living in the biblical "End Times", hardly surprising.

Fiscal Responsibility?

Very good Jim. It was a little tough to get through the 45 minute video, but I eventually managed. I rolled my eyes so many times they almost got stuck. Between the "Men who stare at goats" and the Gay Bomb, I think I am going to stop paying taxes. I can't believe how easily we were able to invade Iraq and Afghanistan given the level of incompetance and kookery our military exibited in this video. Maybe the military budget is so big, that a couple of billion wasted here and there is no big deal?

No wonder Bush thinks poor childrens health insurance (SCHIP) is too expensive. He is busy building a missle shield in Poland and trying to explode a goats heart with his mind!

Bush would never...

...try and kill a goat with his mind. Goats are his favorite animals.

Ronson Rules!

I highly recommend Jon Ronson's books. _The Men Who Stare at Goats_ gets to the bottom of a lot of the weirdness in Iraq. And why did General Stubblebine think he might be able to walk through walls? He's an electrical engineer. Surely he must understand the powerful repulsive forces between his electrons an the electrons in the walls.

Ronson has an excellent reserach team and is about the friendliest interviewer ever. He gives plenty of rope.

That video had me laughing

That video had me laughing uncontrollably – so much I had to hit pause so as not to miss anything. The best bit was the video of the soldiers staring at the goat. Nothing happened, but that was because they were only subjecting the goat “to Level 1”. Apparently there are different “levels” of staring. For some reason we were not shown the video with the goat actually dying. Or the bit of the hamster actually dying. How convenient.

The world is not ready for Level 3

Seriously - talk about "if looks could kill"; just imagine the mayhem which would occur if this secret faux-Jedi power got out!

What I loved was the General who kept trying to walk through walls, was certain that if he could only get his mind properly set, it would happen.
