Snake Handling Kentucky Couple Denied Foster Care License

My first thoughts after hearing about this were "well duh, of course" but there's more. The couple is upset and suing the foster care agency. Apparently, these people refuse to stop attending snake handling religious services, but promise not to take the foster children to said events.

Attorney Melissa Dixon wouldn't say whether her clients have handled snakes before, but she said Jason and Tammy Barrett of Laurel County have never taken their foster children to the services.

Maybe in their minds, this says they are crazy, but not that crazy?

The Barretts allege that Lifeway for Youth Kentucky violated their constitutional rights.

I could agree that it's a persons constitutional right to be crazy or to worship any crazy-ass way they like, but that's not what we are talking about here. The agency has a responsibility to make sure the children are under the supervision of mentally stable care givers.

I wonder how this will turn out? I most certainly hope the agency has the right to screen out lunatics from the foster care program.

safe

I think snake handling is perfectly safe. If you were a self respecting snake, would you bite a xtian?

no

You'd get a bad taste in your mouth if you did.

agreed, but not only issue

I agree with you that snake handling is safe and shouldn't be used as an excuse to remove a child-care related license. However according to Wikipedia this type of Christian doesn't just handle snakes, they also ingest poison and hold flames close enough to burn themselves. Many (if they can get away with it) choose to handle poisonous snakes. Which may or may not be legal depending on whether the species in question is endangered or not and whether they have proper permits for keeping wildlife, the first is possible and the second is unlikely.

All in all, I feel sorry for the snakes, someone should remove them from the custody of these loons.
