Huckabee/Jesus '08
Who does God want the next American president to be? The race for the primary nomination in both parties is getting interesting with only 20-some days left until the Iowa caucuses kick off primary season. Obama is chipping away at Hillary's inevitableness and Giuliani has a slight lead over Huckabee. Personally I favor Obama, but I am almost certain to vote for whichever candidate wins the Democratic primary.
What's so interesting about these races is that is seems to be all about God. Romney just gave an anti-JFK speech denouncing secularism and whining about bigotry against Mormonism. McCain says America is a Christian nation and is willing to be humiliated by kissing ass at Liberty University (the very same people he called 'agents of intolerance' back in 2000). Pat Robertson endorsed Rudy Giuliani. Evangelicals claim Hillary is a fake Christian and the fact that she goes to church every Sunday since 1992 is a scam. Huckabee claims to be the real "Christian Leader" in his ads sticking it to Romney. And Obama is smeared for being a Muslim because he attended elementary school in Indonesia.
Watching the Dems pander makes me a little sick, but there may be a silver lining. I think this is a good thing for skeptics and for America. If people are not sick already sick of God in politics, they will be soon. The famous college basketball coach Bobby Knight was asked by a reporter why his team doesn't pray before games. Coach Knight replied "because God doesn't give a damn about college basketball." I'm pretty sure, if there were such a thing as God, he wouldn't care about politics either.
I really hope that either Romney or Huckabee win the Republican nomination. I think they are both light-weights and would be easily for the Dem nominee to trounce. I also think either one will give America a chance to decide if we want or president to be a man of faith or a man of reason.
Romney would be easy to defeat because of his constant flip flopping, pandering and his kooky religion. Huckabee would be easy because he is an out loud and proud young earth creationist without the common sense to close his mouth when prodded about his religious beliefs. Romney is looking more and more like a long shot so I am going to start focusing on Huckabee.
It's not a good sign for a candidate when your campaign turns into a punchline. "Mike Huckabee is not a crook, a weirdo or a Mormon." This video cracks me up:
I really don't need to slam Huckabee or make things up about him. I can just let his words speak for themselves.
-1992 "It doesn't embarrass me one bit to let you know that I believe Adam and Eve were real people."
-1992 Huckabee said steps should be taken to "isolate the carriers of this plague" referring to AIDS patients. Recently when asked about this quote, Huckabee was quick to clarify today that he misspoke and meant to say gay AIDS patients should be quarantined.
-1997 Huckabee told the pastors gathered in the Salt Palace Convention Center that while the March 1, 1997, tornadoes which struck Arkansas were tragic, at least the devastation could be clearly seen from a helicopter. In contrast, he said, the catalysts for the nation’s recent school shootings — including the one March 24 near Jonesboro that left four students and a teacher dead and 10 others wounded — were harder to see but were driven by “the winds of spiritual change in a nation that has forgotten its God.”
-1998 "You are right because you called wives to graciously submit to their husband's sacrificial leadership."
-1998 "I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."
I don't know exactly what year these Huckabee quotes are from:
-“The reason we have so much government is because we have so much broken humanity,” he said. “And the reason we have so much broken humanity is because sin reigns in the hearts and lives of human beings instead of the Savior.”
-“I didn’t get into politics because I thought government had a better answer. I got into politics because I knew government didn’t have the real answers, that the real answers lie in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives.”
-"The most basic unit of government is not the city council, quorum court or state legislature," Huckabee said. “It is Mom and Dad raising kids and teaching them respect for authority, others and God.”
-"The nation has descended gradually into crisis," Huckabee said, "and repairing the damage needs to be gradual, too." He said "the solution is simple: faith in Christ."
I think YouTube will be the biggest killer of a Mike Huckabee nomination. Copy/pasting a few quotes is not nearly as powerful as hearing and seeing the insanity for yourself. Here are a couple of my favorites:
Huckabee says God and prayer is responsible for his recent surge in the polls.
This is simply amazing. Here is Huckabee on Bill Maher's show denying evolution.

easy way out
When I read Dirks comments it reminds me of what my dad taught me when I was little, most of the time the easy way is not always the right way. So let me reflect here a little bit.It is easy not to believe that there is a god. It is easy to pick apart the people that lead this country. It is easy to belive that America is to blame for global warming.
One of the founding fathers said that it takes religon to have freedom and freedom to have religon.
I choose to have faith in my God, Country, and the American people. That doesn't seem to be the most popular view these days, its not the "in" thing to say.
You say that you don't want religon in your politics but Obama and Hillary are religous people that belive in God. How can you be for them but against religon? If you are voting for them then you are voting for a God fearing person to be leader of this country. I for one will vote for the best person but will not vote for anyone who does not have God in their heart.
You seem to take the path that is the easiest. I hope that you are willing to accept the consiquences.
Article Six: No Religous Tests
Was this just a drive by anonymous post or are you up for some Q and A?
From my point of view, the easy way would be not to think for myself and unquestioningly believe what was being taught to me. My parents really tried to brainwash me into believing in god. I went to church, Sunday school, summer bible camps and two years of confirmation classes. Fortunately, the early childhood conditioning and indoctrination did not stick. I eventually broke out and was able to think for myself.
Yes. When they do a good job I give them my praise, when they do a bad job I try to make sure someone else takes their place. I am pretty fair overall. The only people I hate more that Democrats are Republicans right now. If the Dems do a bad job, they will have to be kicked out. I see the D's as the lesser of two evils for the time being.
Huh? I think you are confused. I've never heard anyone say that America alone is to blame for global climate change, but that's besides the point. The real 'easy vs. hard' issue here is doing something about it. It's easy to sit back and do nothing. It's hard to recycle. It's hard to stop using carbon based energy and look for alternative clean sources. It's hard to mobilize a country to change it's ways to protect the planet.
Again, from my point of view, it appears to me that people like you are sitting on their butts taking the easy way out and denying the inconvenient truth's scientists are trying to warn us about.
No. Actually, that's what Willard Mitt Romney said a few days ago in this speech. Anyway, our founding fathers said many things. The really important things they said are in the Constitution. The Constitution is a document stating this nations founding principles and is THE law of the land. No where in the Constitution is God or Jesus or "religion requiring freedom" mentioned.
You're not going to start playing the poor persecuted Christian victim card are you? Come on fella. Do I need to start linking to statistics showing who is in the minority here? And when you say "American" people, do you mean all American people or just those who think just like you? I ask because it sounds like you contradict yourself a few lines later when you say that you wouldn't vote for "anyone who doesn't have god in their heart" and you warn me of "facing the consequences." Please clarify.
You are correct that I would like religion left out of politics but you and I both know that is far from the reality. One of the reasons I am supporting the Dem candidates, is that they pander to religious fundies a little less that the Republicans.
I'm not against religion. I'm against religion deciding this nations policies. See the difference? I bet you would agree with me if all of a sudden you were in the minority? Imagine if tomorrow everyone became a Mormon or a Scientologist? What if Tom Cruise was elected president? You and I would both be fighting for equality and against religious discrimination from the kooks.
My reading of the Constitution says that the government should be neutral regarding religion. The state shall establish no religion. There shall be no religious tests. Etc...
I don't really have a choice do I? I am acutely aware of this and actively working to change this situation. I don't see why an atheist wouldn't be a good president. Maybe you want to explain it to me?
Article Six of the US Constitution states that "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
So really, you don't believe in the Constitution do you? You just told me you have a religious test. You are bigoted against anyone who doesn't share your particular religious faith. That's very un-American of you. I hope you are able re-think your prejudiced views some day.
Seems like you are the epitome "easy way out" mentality? I would encourage you to flex your critical thinking skills.
And what are these consequences? More bigotry? Name calling? Demonization? Fear mongering? Sorry, that's pretty much the norm and I have grown used to it from your kind.
Who Would That Be Exactly?
Well, la-dee-friggin-da. You ever get nosebleeds up there on your high-horse? What if the best person was an atheist? Would you not vote for the best person because of this simple fact? How about if the best person is a Jew? Or a black man? Or a woman?
There is no difference, you bigot.
Who exactly, out of all the candidates for President of the United States, does NOT profess to have "God in their heart"?
That is the point we are making. There is no good choice for secular Americans. Instead, we will try and vote for the candidate who will do the LEAST amount of damage to the wall of separation of church and state.
How can you watch that parody video and not get a little nervous about what a fucking psycho religious nutjob Huckabee is? Do you really, truly want a dominionist, fundamentalist, Baptist preacher running our country? Do you really want a theocracy in place so that you can put all of us uppity atheists in our place and force "every knee to bow and every heart confess"? Is that what you're aiming for? Forced worship of your own personal flavor of invisible magical man in the sky? Because that is what you're asking for if you vote for Huckabee.
I don't know, you may like that. I certainly won't.
You make it easy on me
An atheist is not the same thing as you put it. How come every time someone has a different view point they are not heard. I tell you my thoughts and you don't have the "skill?" to make your arguement. Your ignorance is high lighted by the name calling. Be careful who you listen to.
Hopefully the new president will have the courage to do whats right for the country and not try and be politically correct. Right is right and wrong is wrong.'
Peace
next president
I hope the next president has the political guts to stop the war.
That parody . . .
. . . is hilarious. The others are just plain scary. But no surprise - the man is a loon. Which means that he is the perfect vehicle for all the religious right nuts to put all their efforts behind.
