All I Want For Christmas Is An Archaeopteryx

Brent Rasmussen's picture

Cute, Vox, except in my neck of the woods he'd be driving a red F350 6x6 dually super-duty crew cab, towing a horse trailer full of cutters, and he'd leave a lariat and a roping practice dummy. Heheh...

[link] Atheist Santa

Who's that coming down the chimney? Nobody -- that's ridiculous. Atheist Santa shows up in a gray Toyota Corolla and knocks on your door. Once you let him in and he has cookies and milk -- come on, even atheists love cookies and milk -- he will explain to your child that Santa may love all the children of the world, but he has never submitted his claims of flying reindeer and magical present delivery to James Randi, who would gladly pay a million dollars if presented with irrefutable proof of his wild claims. However, as a gesture of goodwill, Atheist Santa will leave your child with a set of wooden periodic-table blocks and a scale model of archaeopteryx.

Hi Only I want to agregate

Hi

Only I want to agregate information of this :

An Archaeopteryx is the most ancient bird that we know about that existed on Earth. How do we know? Because in 1861, a fossilized Archaeopteryx was discovered in a slate quarry in southern Germany. The fossil at first appeared to be a reptile but, on closer examination, the archaeologists of the time realised that the surface of the slate showed clear imprints from lots of fine feathers.

The bird was given the Latin name Archaeopteryx lithographica – which means ‘ancient wings in slate’. Several more fossils have since been found and we are beginning to work out where this ancient bird fits into the evolution of modern birds.

This ancient bird would have been about as big as a pigeon when it was alive. It did have a body very similar to that of a simple reptile buts is forelimbs were modified into short wings covered in feathers. Unlike birds of today, it had teeth and claws on the front of its wings. It also had a long tail.

Bye .. Thanks

Are You Stereotyping

" However, as a gesture of goodwill, Atheist Santa will leave your child with a set of wooden periodic-table blocks and a scale model of archaeopteryx."

O.K., so yes, this year my kids are getting a telescope, a microscope, a chemistry set and robot construction kit. But, that doesn't mean that just because I'm a naturalist that I'm also a science geek.

Geesh Brent, such stereotyping.
