Nike

Concerning the whole muslim sport-wear thing: If these women otherwise would not be able to participate in sports, how does it hurt if Nike designs Muslim-appropriate sports-wear for them? Sure it is bullshit that they have to cover themselves from head to toe. But what if they have no (immediate) choice and want to go swimming, jogging, whatever? At least Nike is designing something that they won't trip over. I understand the sentiment concerning boycotting Nike, but think about the benefit to these women. Hey, maybe sports will make them stronger and they can kick those fundie men's asses!

Mixed feelings

Sorry I've been lurking so long.

Have you read Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali? She talks about coming to Germany, and then eventually, the Netherlands, and realizing how the "uncovered" women there did not drive men into sexual frenzies, as she was taught. It was an eye-opener for her.

So on one hand, after reading Ali's book, and Price of Honor by Jan Goodwin, I know how the fundie Muslims think and act regarding their women. And I think it is abhorrent, disgraceful, and disgusting. On the other hand, aren't Muslims such an easy target these days? Americans, especially the Christian fundies (ironically), take delight at stereotyping and denigrating Muslims. Maybe it is partially, or even mostly deserved. But I felt a bit uncomfortable about the statistics presented. Are they correct? I need to check on that. They may be. However, if the internet were available sixty years ago, just think about what some people would be posting about "negro crime". I guess I'm saying I want to base my opinions on knowledge and evidence, and not stereotypes, but dammit, sometimes those stereotypes are there for a reason. There I go thinking too much again.

One of my next projects will be to read the Koran (Quran) and see for myself what it says about the whole subject. But, of course, like the Christian Bible, much of it may hinge on interpretation.

Reading the Koran

Just kinda thinkin' here:

If I've read one book a week since I was, say, 10 years old, I've read 2,364 books.

I think I'll read the Koran just as soon as I finish the next 5,000.

I'm not saying I won't read it. Just that it's not a high priority.

Some years back, an old cowboy buddy of mine got me into Louis L'Amour westerns. I read every one I could get my hands on, and it must have been at least 50, before I started feeling I was reading the same book over and over and over.

I'm guessing I'd feel the same way about romance novels, but I'd probably figure it out faster.

With holy books, maybe it only takes one. I mean, after all, at least the readers of "Passion on the Range" aren't out killing people, or trying to get elected to school boards.

Moral Lesson from King Abdullah

Bush's hand-holding and lip-kissing buddy King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia tells us what is wrong with the world: Atheism.

"We have lost sincerity, morals, fidelity and attachment to our religions and to humanity," Abdullah said Monday, deploring "the disintegration of the family and the rise of atheism in the world – a frightening phenomenon that all religions must confront and vanquish."

Imagine that, a lecture on morality from a stone age, stone throwing country.

Not Koran

A fella I once talked to, who is a Quran-only Muslim, said that that women-covering-their-body thing is not in the Quran. Therefore, he said, "I would never cover my wife's head or ask her to use a burka."

Well, Dirk . . .

. . . you know that you're just "being abusive to Islam" by posting this, don't you?

*sigh*
