In other corpse-related news . . .
OK, the story of the three teenagers using a skull as a bong wasn't *exactly* the usual fare for UTI. In an effort to make up for that, I bring you this news item:
Kids, mom lived with 90-year-old's corpse for weeks in Wis.
MADISON, Wis. - Two children and their mother lived for about two months with the decaying body of a 90-year-old woman on the toilet of their home's only bathroom, on the advice of a religious "superior" who claimed the corpse would come back to life, authorities said Friday.
he children — a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy — cried hysterically Wednesday after a deputy who came to their Necedah home looking for Magdeline Alvina Middlesworth ordered them out because of the stench from her body.
The children were in foster care Friday. Their mother, Tammy Lewis, and self-described "bishop" Alan Bushey remained in custody on felony counts of being a party to causing mental harm to a child.
Mental harm? That would be the religious indoctrination, right? You know, this part:
Lewis told the deputy that Middlesworth had died about two months earlier, but that God told her Middlesworth would come to life if she prayed hard enough.
* * *
She said she propped Middlesworth on the toilet and left the room to call Bushey, who told her to leave the woman alone and pray for her, the complaint said. He said he had received signs that God would raise her from the dead with a miracle.
* * *
The boy at the house told a detective he had considered running away because he was uncomfortable with the situation. He said Bushey told him that demons were trying to make it look as if Middlesworth wouldn't come back to life...
Yeah, demons. And probably that it was the kid's fault that the demons were there. Because, you know, he just didn't have enough faith or something.
OK, that's enough corpses (or parts thereof) for one weekend. I promise. Unless I find something really really good.

Pray Harder
Of course they didn't pray hard enough.
If that's what god commanded that's what they should have done.
This is all just proof of how they didn't pray hard enough.

Don't Feed the trolls
Hey Jim
Did you read the post.
You might like it.
That's why I posted it here.
Don't knock it until you've read it.
I've also noticed that people resort to INSULTS in the ABSENCE of a valid counter argument.
So tell me why do you use insults?
Human Sacrifice
So here's the post again.
I actually think you'll like it I'm not shitting you.
I think the two stories
make an interesting point about comparative values.
I may be speaking only for myself here, but I don't think that digging up a skull to use as a bong is all that weird. Many young adults go through phases of obsession with death and its trappings, and also phases of sometimes extreme rebelliousness. Getting high in gruesome or seemingly dangerous ways and scaring the newbies has been a cheap thrill for the macabre-minded since kids have gotten high. I am much, much more concerned with teens that torture animals, or slip hard drugs to their peers, or bully others constantly...behavior that is truly destructive, not just unseemly.
I would bet that these two incidents are seen as close to equal in disturbing qualities by many people, particulary the religious and anti-drug conservatives. I would also bet that many who would like to see a harsh penalty for the stoner vandals would give a free pity- pass to the freaks with the corpse on their toilet.
I see the cases as miles apart in both cause and damage done.
A few bored teens dig up some dead fucker and have a sick laugh. Big damn deal, shitty kids do far worse things to living creatures all the time. They should have to pay for the clean-up, apologize to any family of the deceased, and get a good solid laughing-at.
In the second case, we have religious lunacy taken to the extreme. Forcing two teens to live with a rotting corpse while you sit around and pray for resurrection is, in my opinion, about a million times more disgusting, abusive, selfish, and potentially physically and psychologically harmful than anything the stupid stoners did. I see that there was legal action in both cases; I wonder who will suffer greater consequences and for what reasons.

I cannot even imagine how you could live with a rotting corpse. I've participated in about half a dozen autopsies as a summer intern at a hospital lab, and I've seen bodies that were found after just a few days. The stench permeates everything. I had hair half way down my back, but eventually had to cut it up to my chin because I couldn't get rid of that dead body smell with any amount of sweet smelling shampoos. My clothes were thrown out without a second thought. And I was completely covered with gown, gloves, mask, shoe covers, and head cap!
So how the hell can someone be so fucked up that they would ever put their own children through this????
It's the logical progression of Christianity...
Any religion that teaches you can have whatever you want if you pray hard enough for it will eventually lead to this type of insanity. Of course many Christians will disagree, because they aren't insane enough to let their belief go this far (yet). They will remind you that God answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is "no". They will remind you that God takes his people in their own time, and this family simply forgot that. They'll make every attempt to excuse their own religious teachings as not being at fault, just like the Muslims do.
Yet, it's only belief in religion that would lead people to do this. It's only belief in religion that makes a dead body so sacred that would lead Goth kids to find it cool to use a skull to smoke pot (and the rest of the world to gasp in horror at the idea.) We should respect and honor the dead, for the lives they led, but only religion teaches us to honor the dead because their "spirit" is somehow insulted by this treatment. It's the natural outcome of religion, and why religion should be banned.

It's so obvious...
...it should go without saying, but obviously they didn't pray hard enough. I think that's the most infuriating part to me about all the religious shit, those bastards always leave themselves an out--'you didn't pray hard enough'. 'You weren't faithful enough.' 'It's gawd's plan' and of course we can't forget the ever-useful 'gawd works in mysterious ways'.
As to the corpse on the terlette, I think it's kind of tragic-comic--funny to think about leaving the old gal sitting there and stinking up the place, but beyond tragic that people can be so gullible as to believe talking to themselves (fervently!) will bring the dead back to life. But then what do I know, me of 'little faith'. And of course it's tragic for the kids, that they are brought up in that absurdity.

Freaky.
Freeeeeekeeeee.

Somewhere today, a plumber is saying "Damn, did somebody DIE on this toilet?? Open a window, Charley, and bring me that big jar of Vicks out of the truck!"
Validation.
Yup. But I have my validation: PZ covered it too. And someone in the comments also brought up the bong-skull story. I'm always amused when I post something that I think is a little "out there", only to find it later on one of the huge traffic sites like his.

The corpse is bad enough
But why is everybody making such a big deal about it and ignoring the fact that this woman prevented her kids from using the toilet for two months. Seriously, two months without a toilet... You can pee in the tub (or sink), but where are you going to put the feces? Between that and the corpse the demons the woman was talking about probably had wings and went "buzzzzz" around the house.
3BR/2B
Maybe the house had a garage, too. I didn't read the article. Did they perchance live in a trailer?
Just spread the legs...
I suppose. How much room could a shriveled up corpse take anyway?
