Just curious - how are gas prices in your neck of the woods?

It's $3.599 here in central Missouri, and has jumped about $.40 in the last month.

Gas Map

I just came across this site that gives you a map of the US with color-coding for gas prices.

Jim Downey's picture

Very cool map.

Thanks, BA - that is a very cool map. Though a bit behind - gas prices locally jumped another dime overnight (and a dime the night before that...). We're now at $3.799.

I can't believe how cheap it is in the U.S.

diesel in Arizona

I have a one-ton Chevy diesel pick up. (yeah, don't say it, I know....)
Anyway, there is a Mobil/Exxon station near work. I never buy gas there because its too expensive but I do watch the sign.
On Tuesday, when leaving work it was $4.27 for a gallon of diesel. On Wednesday morning, it was $4.29. No biggie.
But when I left work on Wednesday evening, it was $4.39!!
Then today, when I left work it was $4.45!!! IN TWO FUCKING DAYS!!
Thank you SO MUCH George W for MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
You will have destroyed the country I love in 8 years when it took 250 years to build it. What an asshole.

Price Breakdown

Here are a couple of articles describing the cost breakdown for fuels. Especially interesting is the one put out by the Canadian Dept. of Finance. This shows that the basic product price is surprisingly level worldwide - with the wide price differences almost entirely taxes.

We're paying 3.70 for the cheap stuff. Luckily we've bought cars that only use the lower octane.

3.69, Neenah, Wisconsin.

That ain't bad, considering. I'm glad we bought my wife a new and smaller car - the mini-van we had was good but not great for gas.

Hey, it's a market thing. If gas stays dear, then we'll build cheaper cars and come up with better uses for petrol (eventually) than burning it up and dumping it into the atmosphere.

Short term, I live two miles from work and I can ride my bike in the summer.

...in Edmonton, Alberta they're paying the same

In California North (the Okanagan in southern BC) we're currently paying CAN$1.33 per liter. I think that's about US$5.50/gallon.
The best part is that in Edmonton, Alberta (Texas North) they're paying the same prices even though the oil sands are up there

Sorry about your luck, but I live in Edmonton and we're paying $1.20 per litre. If it makes you feel better it's still cheaper anywhere in the States.

gas

in '99 i lived in kansas and gas was $0.79/gallon. good ol' days! now its ~3.70 in central florida. i picked up a motorcycle and sold my car so now i get about 75 mpg :D too bad it is so damn hot down here that driving the bike is a pain really. my gas bill has gone down but my water bill (post ride hydration + shower hehe) has "made up for it."

Prices

When I was a kid in Texas, I saw gas prices at 17.9 cents per gallon. I think that works out to a bit more than a 2,000 percent increase in the past 50 years.

Today I'd be filling my tank for just under $3, rather than almost $60.

decrepitoldfool's picture

Adjusted for inflation,

... it's a measly 900 percent. We're in the wrong business.

But! The poor oil companies cannot afford to build refineries. Have you noticed their latest advertising blitz; "Since mutual funds hold most of the stock in the oil company, that means you really own it" Like it's a sacred public trust or something, and hasn't been driving our country into wars and environmental bankruptcy.

richg's picture

On the Left Coast...

Here on the Left Coast (North Oregon Coast) it is $3.899 for unleaded. $4.049 for Premium.

Out of that, I wonder why no one is making a comparison between the oil companies profit margin and the government's profits (i.e. taxes). It seems that the oil companies have at least put up the initial investment and risk, while the government simply takes a bigger cut because they can.

If you are referring to oil taxes,

... those build the roads and bridges. Most of which are in need of repair. Darn government!

Tell me about it.

I have over 20 years as a City and County Public Works Employee. I know where the local money comes in and goes out. Have you seen the level of paperwork and inflated wages that are required when federal money is involved? And you thought NASA's toilet seats were expensive.

BTW, only a small portion of the total taxes on petroleum are "Gas Taxes" that are tied to roads.

Just thinking about it

gives me the vapors:) Literally.
I'm near Pismo Beach in California, and the whole central coast has been wavering between $3.49 and $3.99 for two months now. I'm actually a little surprised how uniform the prices have become nationwide. In the mid-nineties I think it was, when gas prices really started going up again after being under a dollar per gallon in some places, there was a 50-70 cent variation at times, just within central California locations. Now it seems that most of the nation's prices are within 30-40 cents. I remember that is was actually worth driving half the way across Bakersfield to get to the Am/Pm. At today's prices, a few cent difference has become almost meaningless.

Just under a year ago, I came into the possession of a car for the first time in seven years. It's a 1990 Chevy Cavalier, runs great, and it belonged to really old people. I just rolled the odometer a couple of months ago with no big problems, and best of all it still gets 24-26mpg. But almost a month ago, all of the brakes started going out, so I parked it. I'm looking at 250-500 dollars, which isn't such a big deal, really.
But that summabitch is staying parked for at least three
more weeks anyway, until it gets too hot to walk everywhere comfortably. I take the bus to work, I walk four miles home, and in less than a month I've lost
ten pounds and feel better than I have in months.
I'm not trying to be preachy here, but if folks can find ways to conserve and do without the car when it's not necessary, not only will they lose a few pounds, but they will also be punishing some of the "right" people. In most parts of the country, this is the perfect time for a walk anyway.

I have a friend...

...in NW Washington State, Bellingham to be precise, and his town has refineries and offloading ports and all, he even works for a refinery service company, and we've been kicking this around for a coupla years now. He has consistently been paying about 50 cents more than us down here in SE AZ. Kind of ironic that he can look out the window at refineries and yet he is paying so much more.

They say our gas here comes from the pipeline that runs to Insane Diego from points east, like Louisiana and Texas, and we really do seem to be cheaper than many other areas. Now if I could just locate that pipeline...hehehe.

Yup cheap oil is a thing of the past, I expect it will reach $5, especially if the shrub decides to nuke Iran before he skulks back to Texas.

Just think, if we didn't join NAFTA and were able to stop exporting oil to the US of A, Canada would have the ability to be independent of foreign oil. Sadly, I think there would be a US-supported coup to replace the democratically elected government in Canada if that were attempted...

Hmmm

I hear that the Dictator of Canada is hiding weapons of mass destruction somewhere out in the desert... Oh, and forbidding freedom to the oppressed French minority and stuff!

At present, I'm somewhat insulated from gas prices, since I drive a company truck for about 90% of my travel. I don't actually pay much attention, except to note that filling the tank now breaks the $100 mark.

I certainly don't live for the day when I have to refill my own vehicle.

New Rules

It's $3.599 here in central Missouri...

Heh, that reminds me of one of Bill Maher's "New Rules" on a recent episode of "Real Time..." It went something like:

"Now that gas has reached four dollars a gallon, can we drop the nine-tenths-of-a-cent bullshit?"

This morning it was $3.64 at my gas station here in Vegas. Friday it was $3.61. I believe it was in the lower $3.50's a couple of weeks ago.

Anonymous User's picture

our cheapest has been

our cheapest has been tetering just over and under $4.00 for a few weeks now. We havn't seen anything 3.50 or below though for probably most of a year now...

Pshaw.

We just paid 3.89$/gallon in Albany tonight. It was 3.85$ at BJs, but their pumps were shut down (some sort of problem, or so I heard).

Glorious San Diego. That's

Glorious San Diego.

That's just the city average mind you. There are a few sub sections of the city that are 4.10ish or even worse. I still don't get why people don't drive another 5-10 miles to get to some of the (relatively) cheaper stations...

Kilgore Trout's picture

Ouch

I'm in upstate NY as well (Elmira) and we've still got it easy here, its only $3.89 although now that I say that I haven't bought gas in a week or so.

And yeah when are they going to drop that nine tenths of a cent bullshit?

In agreement with... I can't recall who. I walk to work, I need the exercise, it saves money and the environment, everybody wins. And I don't care if I sound preachy, we all know that the first step is conservation. We have to start somewhere. Oh and it's taken a lot more than just walking to work but I've lost about 45 lbs and I feel great, congrats to the person who talked about parking their Cavalier. BTW, brakes are easy to do yourself and I'd be surprised if you couldn't do it yourself for under 100.

We here in North America have no idea how spoiled we are.

Jim Downey's picture

Well, actually . . .

Yeah, I've traveled enough in Europe to know what they've been paying for gas since the 70s. Mostly, that was due to the tax model used, which seemed absurd to Americans - but they always had good-to-better public transportation as a result, without the oil companies raking in record profits.

About $3.50-$3.56...

...here in Southern Aridzona. We've seen it go up nearly a penny a day recently, or about ten cents a week maybe. It was under $3--about $2.90--three months ago, but half of that 60 cent increase has been in the past month.

It's always a long ways to anywhere out here, it's a 30 mile round trip to town, and my 1986 Dodge 3/4T PU gets only 9 mpg...you can bet with a 'trip to town' costing about $10 it's changed my habits, even tho I'm a recluse to begin with. Wife has a Subaru wagon that gets about 30 mpg, and I also have an old Ford Ranger that gets 20, so the Dodge only gets used for whatever the Ford can't handle. It has certainly changed our lifestyle.
