Kenyans burn alive 11 'witches'

Eleven women accused of being witches have been burned to death by a mob in the west of Kenya, police say.

A security operation has been launched to hunt down villagers suspected of killing the women in Kisii District.

Local official Mwangi Ngunyi condemned the murders.

"People must not take the law into their own hands simply because they suspect someone," he told AFP news agency.

*sigh*

It Never Ends

I'm reading a novel right now that's based on the Salem witch trials. In fact, the author is a tenth-generation descendant of one of the women who was hanged as a witch....let's contemplate those words, "hanged as a witch." Just yesterday, before encountering this post, I was commenting to a friend that I could easily see that kind of mass hysteria occuring again, that the capacity for that sort of madness is still very present in human beings. How sad to have those feelings confirmed and how terrible to imagine the suffering of those women.

African Supernatural

A good book about some traditional African beliefs is "Healers in the Night" by Eric de Rosny. "Les yeux de ma chevre" in French. There is also a video based on it, but I didn't find it on the net.

I hope...

...it isn't the species Gingrichie, or we'll have to throw you in the river in a sack with a bunch of rocks to see if you sink or float! Say it ain't so!

Witch Recipe

Well, if you have ever had Kenyan Roasted Witch with Goat Cheese-Macadamia Nut Crust and Parsley-Pimento Couscous then you know why it is important to kill witches.

*sigh* indeed

"People must not take the law into their own hands simply because they suspect someone," he told AFP news agency.

That's too obvious to need saying. Of course they must be put thru The Trials first to prove they're witches! The dunking! The rack! The sack full of rocks and tossed into the river! The mark of da debil! Or perhaps...more insidious and painful torture will get them to spill their guts.

I seriously doubt anyone alive today will ever see the end of this religious madness. So sad.

This Is Why Missionaries Are So Important

See, it's a GOOD thing that missionaries from the US (well, Florida, anyhow) are over there making sure that people in Africa keep believing in witches.

Lucky for them, they can just watch a movie that the missionaries are carting around and white Jesus makes them immune to witchcraft.

What would be the humanist equivalent?

If non-Theists were as wacky as Theists are about these things, what would we do?

"Six villagers were burned to death by a mob of Darwinists who suspected them of failing to evolve."

It just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

But Jim

Where's the harm in believing again?

The harm

The harm isn't in the believing. The harm is in the believers.
