Fox News: Palin didn't know Africa was a continent.

Man, and I thought my opinion of Gov. Palin couldn't get lower:

Less than 24 hours after the election is over, and this stuff is starting to come out already. Someone has the long knives out for Sarah.

Breaking News

The Secret Service is now connecting Palin's attacks on Obama's patriotism — "palling around with terrorists — with a sharp rise in death threats against Obama.

I find this news a little

I find this news a little bit silly. If you want to pick apart Sarah Palin, there was already plenty of ammunition from her past and her pre-election interviews. I'm not sure why this little detail is getting so much attention. At any rate, I'm not sure it ultimately matters either. What is the real effect of this news coming out? Are there really people out there who will now change their mind about Palin's intellect because they just realized something new about her? Her appeal was never her world knowledge or intelligence in the first place.

Don't forget about McCain

And don't forget, this says just as much about McCain as it does Palin. McCain was willing to put this idiot a heartbeat away from the Presidency just because he thought it would help him get elected. Pure political cynicism. He may have been an honorable man at one time, but now he is no better than the Karl Rove's of this country, willing to do anything, even if it puts our entire country at risk in order to further his own political agenda.

Long Knives and Motivations

There's a reason, I think, that we'll see Palin get repeatedly kicked around by the GOP over the coming months. After this loss, I think they're beginning to realize that it's not enough anymore to "energize the base." If they're going to get back to national party status, they need to expand beyond right-wing social conservatism and religiously-motivated voters. Those groups are shrinking; demographics have shown a shift to the left (e.g., toward the center) in younger voters. In other words, the meeting occurring today among GOP leaders is likely to result in a reformation of the party into something that's fiscally conservative but less prone to legislating purely "moral" issues. Sarah Palin has shown herself to be capable of attracting almost exclusively that extreme right wing — mainly that small group who still, for example, insists that Dubya has done a good job.

If the GOP is going to be successful in doing this, they're going to need to utterly crush Palin. The new GOP, by 2012, is more likely to resemble something that George Will would have cooked up than it is a menagerie of Joe the Plumbers.

Either way, as long as the coalition falls

I'm for it either way. Fiscal conservatives, or moral conservatives.

They can re-form as purely a Greedy Oligarch Party, promoting oil profits and unregulated stock markets, dropping Jesus and Gays from the platform.
Or they can re-form as a purely Godly Ostracist Party, a platform of only Jesus and Gays, with the substance of policy being "Africa is a country".

Either way they only get 20% of the vote instead of the 40% they get as a coalition. It's all good.

Foresight

So ... AGAIN they picked a dumbass, and knew it, and deliberately hid the fact from the American people.

Republicans may be nice people, but the GOP itself is unprincipled, anti-American scum.

I'm just glad their games are no longer working quite so well. Thank FSM for bloggers, and the Internets. And a terrorist fist bump to Katie Couric!

Not to mention Tina Fey!

But seriously, do you really think the 2012 GOP nominee won't be Palin or someone like her, instead of someone like Newt Gingrich? (like him or not, at least the man actually thinks) The GOP has driven away almost everyone with a college education (except for Liberty University and Bob Jones University grads), leaving them with a base who believe that Rush Limbaugh is an intellectual giant.

"The Republicans Are Now the Stupid Party"

No, G'Kar, don't blame me - this is from the former Senior Editor of the National Review, who also wrote speeches for Richard Nixon and Ronnie Reagan:

The Republicans Are Now the Stupid Party

On November 4, two thirds of voters under 30 voted for Obama. That’s the future. A large majority of voters with college educations voted for Obama. That represents the best informed segment of the electorate. So, how did everything go wrong for the Republicans?

* * *

Sarah Palin is now the heroine of the Republican base. Scary. During the campaign it became obvious that she is completely ignorant on the principal issues. It never became widely known that she is a religious nut: she believes in the imminent End of Days and the “Rapture,” in which the saved will be suddenly wooshed up to heaven—a notion that has no basis in scripture or anything else. She believes she was elected governor because of a laying-on-of-hands by an African clergyman who had run a witch out of town for causing automobile accidents.

This stuff makes William Jennings Bryan look like Martin Heidegger. I think the recent electoral disaster will energize reasonable Republicans to form a caucus with the party. Eisenhower was a prudential, common sense Republican, who loathed extremism and arrogant ignorance. He knew the New Deal could not be repealed. He once said that Senator William Knowland “tested the limits of human stupidity.” Despite Watergate, Nixon was a successful center-right president, and first-rate on foreign policy. Reagan too was a successful center-right president. It is no accident that in the election, Julie Nixon Eisenhower and David Eisenhower supported Obama.

In its embrace of the religious right under George W. Bush, the Republican Party became the stupid party. And committing suicide along with it has been the conservative movement. The party united around god, guns and gays is finished.
