A Pig In A Poke

Brent Rasmussen's picture

A Christian blogger is pretty upset that us godless atheists want - *gasp* - equal rights.

[link] We all know that Judeo-Christian values have been the core of our nation’s military since the Revolutionary War and that soldiers, for centuries, have relied on The Almighty for protection during peacetime and wartime. This is just another attempt by godless leftists to chip away at the very foundation of what makes America the land of the free: God. These people must be chomping at the bit for Barack Obama to take office so that they finally have a sympathetic ear - someone who shares their affinity for a godless America.

Any time I see the words “We all know…”, I check my wallet because someone is trying to sell me a pig in a poke.

I noticed that she filed this post under “Our Enemies”. Does she truly consider her fellow American citizens - who just happen to be godless - as her “enemies”?

Truly?

If so, why? What the heck did we ever do to her? I mean, we are indeed trying to get her to follow the law and the Constitution - to respect our civil right not to be *forced* to attend a prayer function that we do not believe in. But other than that, what’s the problem? Don’t we have that right under the law and the Constitution’s Bill of Rights?

Doesn't she want to follow the law and the Constitution? Does she want to be an outlaw instead? Take over the government and force all of us uppity godless atheists into re-education camps? Have mandatory prayers, oh say five times a day? Blasphemy laws? Prison for “admitted atheists”? A return to McCarthyism? Purges? Theocracy? With her own personal flavor of theological lunacy at the helm?

What *exactly* is she getting at here?

Please forgive me, and everyone else in America who does not share her religion, if we say “no thanks”.

Let’s just stick to the Constitution, shall we? She is not “more equal” than anyone else. She needs to get over it.

That it is a very telling fact.

You can examine many of the private letters, correspondences, speeches, etc. of the Founding Fathers regarding their religiosity. Many of their documents are glowing endorsements of religion, while there are many that are scathing indictments of religion as well.

The most important analysis should be the documents they placed in the public record for posterity’s sake to which the nation would seek guidance. And these are the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.

But let’s take a look at the principles of our government for a further examination.

Democracy? Three Branches of Government? A Bill Of Rights? Government by consent? Bicameral Legislature? A Republic? Federalism? A Nation of Law not Men? Judicial Review? The Rights of Man? Liberty? Proportional Representation? One Man One Vote? Separation of Powers? Checks and Balances?

These are not Judeo-Christian principles. Most of these concepts originated during the Enlightenment and were put to paper well before 1776 or 1789. I would argue that our country was founded more on the principles of enlightenment, ration, and reason - Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, David Hume, and Hobbes - than any religious doctrine.

We were fortunate in that James Madison, James Monroe, Ben Franklin, John Adams, et. al., did great research, were well read, and incorporated these ideas into a cohesive philosophy for a secular government.

The Founding Fathers so feared the role of religion in government that they never mentioned “god” in the Constitution and only spoke to it once thirteen years prior to the writing of the Constitution in The Declaration of Independence - an oblique reference to a “Creator”. That it is a very telling fact.

Kentucky Boy's picture

God is our first line of defense!

In a similar vein, here in Kentucky the state office of homeland security is required by law to acknowledge our reliance on God for our safety and security. Of course, as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell told us, God laid down on the job on 9/11 because of those homosexual, feminist, wiccan, ACLU abortionists.

Kentucky Boy's picture

Uh-Oh!

After the article about Kentucky's Office of Homeland Security being required to give God the credit for keeping us safe ran, a group called American Atheists filed a lawsuit to deny God the credit! If we fire God, who will keep us safe from the terrorists?

rebuttal

The following is a poem written by Judge Roy Moore from Alabama . Judge Moore was sued by the ACLU for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom foyer. He has been stripped of his judgeship and now they are trying to strip his right to practice law in Alabama ! The judge's poem sums it up quite well.
America the beautiful,
or so you used to be.
Land of the Pilgrims' pride;
I'm glad they'll never see.

Babies piled in dumpsters,
Abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty;
your house is on the sand.

Our children wander aimlessly
poisoned by cocaine
choosing to indulge their lusts,
when God has said abstain

From sea to shining sea,
our Nation turns away
From the teaching of God's love
and a need to always pray

We've kept God in our
temples,how callous we have grown.
When earth is but His footstool,
and Heaven is His throne.
We've voted in a government
that's rotting at the core,
Appointing Godless Judges;
who throw reason out the door,

Too soft to place a killer
in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill a baby
before he leaves the womb.

You think that God's not
angry,that our land's a moral slum?
How much longer will He wait
before His judgment comes?

How are we to face our God,
from Whom we cannot hide?
What then is left for us to do,
but stem this evil tide?

If we who are His children,
will humbly turn and pray;
Seek His holy face
and mend our evil way:

Then God will hear from Heaven;
and forgive us of our sins,
He'll heal our sickly land
and those who live within.

But, America the Beautiful,
If you don't - then you will see,
A sad but Holy God
withdraw His hand from Thee.

~~Judge Roy Moore~~

wantobe's picture

Bah, humbug!

"Judge" Roy is not only an embodiment of everything that's wrong with Christianity, he's also a pretty good example of the worst possible judge you could have. Fortunately for the rest of the US, he'll never be a judge outside of Alabama (and if we're really lucky, not even there for long.)

Jesus Christ, it's bad enough he has so little understanding of the Constitution; does he really think God's plans are so unimportant that he'll change them just because a few idiots like Roy pray to him?

your comment

I didn't delete your comments, I simply never published them. If you don't agree with my blog posts, then don't read them. Isn't the First Amendment a wonderful thing - we can express our views in cyberspace freely.

You have a blog to express your views, and I have one to express mine. Nothing personal, my friend.

Happy Thanksgiving and many blessings to you.

BTW,

You didn't publish any of my posts either - so we are even! :)

Brent Rasmussen's picture

Huh?

You didn't publish any of my posts either - so we are even! :)

Which exact posts are you referring to? Here at UTI I do not censor any post, ever. (Unless it's obvious spam with six thousand links to Viagra sites, or crap like that, and that is taken care of automagically by Akismet.)

If you are a real person, and you successfully compose and send a post here - your post or your comment gets through. Period. The end.

If you are having trouble wrangling the Drupal commenting system form, then please send me an email (click my picture, top, left,) and I will walk you through it.

Nothing personal, my friend.

Bullshit. You called me your "enemy". That makes it very, very personal for me. So what is it? Am I your "enemy", or your "friend"? How would you like it if your "friend" called you the vile names and made the disgusting accusations against you that you did to American atheists in your original post? Would you still consider them your "friend"?

Are you serious?

Typical

Fine, go ahead and live in that Christian echo-chamber. Just note that it's YOU who are attacking the freedoms of your fellow Americans by singling certain people out as enemies, and not the other way around. You want everybody to bend to your religious beliefs, but you can't be bothered to notice that others have rights and freedoms too.

Just so we're clear on which side of this type of disagreement is more open and freedom-minded (more truly American, in other words):

It is very unusual for liberal or progressive bloggers to delete or ignore comments from people who politely disagree with them. But it is so common for conservatives and Christians to delete comments from others that it goes without any special notice.

And that's a fact.

You might want to think about what sort of person you really are showing yourself to be, Miss Christian. In this matter, you have much more in common with the founders of the Soviet Union than you do with the Founders of the United States.

You might be a great Christian, but you're a lousy American.

(And do you REALLY think those young men and women in uniform -- some of whom were atheists and secularists -- fought and died so you could label them and people like them as enemies?)

It's not a Christian themed

It's not a Christian themed site; it's more about supporting our military. I think you have the wrong impression about me from just one post. I don't hate anyone - it's not a healthy thing to do. I do think, however, that if you're not for God, the you are against Him.

Check out some of the other posts. We're kind of a support-the-military-conservative politics kind of blog. But not everyone's comments get 'airtime" due to the sheer volume of responses we get.

Have an enjoyable Sunday Hank.

By grace,

Sheer volume my back side

LSD says not everyone's comments get 'airtime' due to the sheer volume of responses. I just had a look at their front page and the most responses was 7.

Again I'm voting liar.

HLM's picture

I'll second that.

I posted a response to LSD's post and it too was deleted. (I reposted it.) Right now, five replies are posted, my latest repost included.

What's the point of a blog if you do not allow for alternative points of view?

Close, but no cigar.

I do think, however, that if you're not for God, the [sic] you are against Him.

Close, LSD, but no cigar. We aren't "for" god, because we don't believe in it. We aren't against god for the same reason: we don't believe in it. But we're Americans (those of us who are), and some of us have fought in the military. Who are you to say we're the "enemy"? Is your religion more important than your country, and your Constitution?

Because if it is, then you may feel more comfortable someplace like Iran or Saudi Arabia. They like people who think like you.

anger

You sound so angry Rob. I'll be sure to pray that God softens your heart and opens your heart and your mind to His grace.

Blessings.
LadySheepdog

P.S. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your military service. Our soldiers are our heroes, atheists and Christians alike.

wantobe's picture

Do I sound angry?

Really? Being called the enemy by a presumably fellow American because I don't believe as she does could possibly have something to do with that. Or maybe it's the implication that I don't deserve the same rights as other Americans because I don't bow down to some mythical being.

You don't like the SCA asking our newest president, Mr. Obama, to recognize and respect the Constitution; you basically tell Atheists who serve in the military to shut up and whip out that "Praise Jesus!" and stop causing so much trouble; you are a lying hypocrite (but we've already established that you're a Christian, so I repeat myself) and ignorant to boot; I'm not supposed to be angry?

Hey, if you want angry, I'll fucking give you angry.

From the bottom of my heart, I say "your welcome" for my service. From the top of my heart, though, you receive a hearty "Fuck You and the sanctimonious horse you rode in on." I didn't spend 8 1/2 years in the Army to listen to some knuckle-head like you tell me that I have to leave all logic behind and follow lock-step in your crazy delusions.

Do you really think your prayers are doing any good? Because before you waste any time asking something that doesn't exist to "soften my heart" (what the fuck does that mean, anyway?) and to "open my heart" (that sounds like a threat of some kind), you might want to work a little harder on those "feed the poor" and "peace on earth" and "cure the sick" prayers. Your side hasn't had a lot of luck with those, so you might want to knuckle down and get a little more serious about those before your distract "God" further with meaningless requests.

Wow.

Cool passive-aggressive takedown, LadySheepdog.

Yeah, funny about all that anger that atheists have, huh? I mean, there can’t POSSIBLY be any reason for godless atheists to be angry. Because they’re the ones causing all the problems, not believing in Jesus and all, right?

And when sand in your shoe wears a blister on your foot, what better treatment than to rub more sand on it? Yes, LadySheepdog, pray for us all. We totally love it when you pray for us, down in our heart of hearts. When the blisters hurt, rub more sand on us – with a loving smile! – one more time.

Heh. Yep, you’ve got it down pat. The disarming, loving words, the sweet gentle condescension, the implied promise to give your last breath in prayer that we’ll be saved from our evil ways.

It makes us feel so VISIBLE.

Well, God love you, I say. Thank you, thank you, thank you, LadySheepdog. I weep that you care so much. It’s almost Jesus-like, how good you are to us. I bless the day you came here, and I got to read your loving, generous words. Bless you, you wonderful human being, for simply existing in the same world! Human language cannot express the depth of wondrous joy I feel to know that you’ll be praying for me, piercing the veil of sullen loneliness, the days and nights of terrifying ungodly rationality, and bringing me back to the Light of Good Christian Love.

I am stunned with a passionate admiration for your unbounded selflessness. You are a saint, an angel, a demigoddess of self-sacrificing love, a universe-size mother of unfolding, nurturing spirit.

No, really. Thank you. Thank you so much. And bless you for everything you’ve done for me, and the others here. I think I speak for everyone when I tell you how much we really, really appreciate you.

If love was a rock, you’d be a mountain, nay, a fifty-billion-ton asteroid, sweeping out of the sky to smash us with your full-bosomed affection.

Please forgive me, I cannot continue. I am overcome.

If that was aimed at Brent (which it would seem to be), that's a curious statement to make, as I know that he has a flat-out, no-exceptions policy to allow comments from anyone here. So you are either mistaken, or lying.

Not that I would advocate a post bomb, or anything.

For the record Rob, I didn't delete your comments. I just didn't publish them. Also, I didn't delete the post either.

What I posted...

Just in case they take it down:

Boy you are just all kinds of wrong. It's like you're fractally wrong [definition: You are wrong at every conceivable scale of resolution. Zooming in on any part of your worldview finds beliefs exactly as wrong as your entire worldview].

First off, the SCA will find no friend in Obama. He's as Christian as W. only from the liberal wing. He spouts God all over the place. And let's not forget, he still has to pander to the religious sheep of this country.

Next, what do you mean exactly by Judeo-Christian values? Please list them and if you can, tell me how they are different from the values of the SCA? If they're the same, please stop trying to lay exclusive claim to "values". Those would be American values.

Lastly, one of the things that cracks me up is how Christianity is somehow conflated with what it means to be an American. Please remember America was founded on a Revolution! Christianity demands obedience. Secular Humanists are considered rebellious because they demand equal American rights while you're advocating the status quo.

You may be a good Christian, but if you think American equals Christian, you're a lousy American.

mcmillan's picture

Not surprised they support censorship too

Looks like the anti-American attitudes applies to the comment policy, since they seem to have deleted the response I posted over there.

Reproduction of my comment from memory:
The problem most atheists have is with being FORCED to participate in rituals that we don't believe in. Think how you would feel if a Muslim officer was requiring the soldiers under his command to pray at the times required by Islam, it's the same thing. I don't have a problem with having military chaplains (something apparently James Madison felt differently about), I just want them to respect the fact that not everyone will share a belief in a god.

(Responding to another commentator freaking out that the soldiers will not having a good Christian as Commander in Chief)
I don't think Obama will be too different from previous presidents in this aspect. He's still a Christian and based on his previous speeches doesn't have a problem peppering his speeches with references to general deities like in Lincoln's proclamation that was linked to. As for soldiers feelings about Obama, I don't know about any scientific polling data, but Obama got more donations from military personnel than McCain.
