I know it when I see it ---

You should hear how heated this discussion gets in Alcoholics Annonymous when it involves traditional religious vs agnostic people; AA's who turn their life over to the care of a higher power often say that it is a spiritual as opposed to religious movement. I revere science and logical discourse but how do you quantify Beethoven,deKooning, Herman Melville, of for that matter Karl Jung ?

Monkey Sex

Definitely monkey sex and how you carry that JLD around for awhile afterwards. THAT's what spirituality is, only expanded to include one's approach to the whole of their existence.

a personally evolving organism

semantic...

I find any time wasted on this topic to be shallow and pedantic

Spirituality has no real

Spirituality has no real meaning for me... not a word I use in my life. I use "contentedness".

William James

My namesake, William James, proportedlly said, "The meaning of life is the smell of burnt almonds."

How spiritual!

then why?

"the awe I feel at the beauty of the phenomenal universe"

-As that is a feeling common among lovers of science and objective reality, why use such a semantically loaded word for it and simply call it what you describe it as?

Not to quibble (read: "I'm

Not to quibble (read: "I'm about to quibble"), but of course "Sprituality" is a semantic null. It isn't even a word.

That said, I voted for the "something greater" option because I consider my "spirituality" to be the awe I feel at the beauty of the phenomenal universe.

I sure hope i didn't misspell anything =)

My Vote

"Sprituality is a semantic null. It is literally nonsense."

That which cannot be precisely and uniformly defined isn't worth defining.

Well, they say that there's

Well, they say that there's no precise definition for "porn" or "art"...

Maybe it can be argued that they are not worth defining, but there is something definite that we mean when we (or at least I) say that something is porn (vs. say, erotica, art, or a description of someone's relationship experiences).

I'm voting for the

I'm voting for the "something greater and larger" definition, as that something can ( and I think should ) be a principle such as truth, liberty etc. rather than a Big Sky Daddy or equivalent

Anonymous User's picture

I voted for the "feel that

I voted for the "feel that you're connected to..." although I think that spirituality is a load of bull, but that connection stuff is the bull that the word relates to.

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I don't criticize others who believe. I even acknowledge that their belief in Santa Claus may give their life meaning and make them 'better' people. (or at least believe that they are better people) but then again they might start persecuting those of us that don't believe in Santa Claus, or those who, although they believe in Santa Claus also believe in the Easter Bunny. This is my problem with most religions. They believe their 'theory' is the 'truth' and that to question 'truth' is a sin. and that anyone with another theory or who questions their theory is a heretic and must be silenced at all costs. it amounts to psychological fascism. what a load of bull.

Cry for attention...

I've never known anyone to use the word "spiritual" or "spirituality" except to demonstrate to the person they were talking to that They Were Oh So Superior, Because They Are Spiritual. On the other hand, since the word "spiritual" has been used to denote so many concepts, with quite a few of them irreconcilable, I could also have voted for the semantic null one.
