Army General Promotes Lie About Foxhole Atheists
Army Lt. Gen. H Steven Blum, chief of the National Guard, spoke to the NAACP on July 18, 2006 and praised the diversity in the Army National Guard.
However, he then went on to stick his boot in his mouth and flat-out denied that atheists and agnostics even existed, and lumped them together with bigots.
So, not only is the good General accusing me of lying when I say that I am an atheist and a veteran, but he's also stating that I am the moral equivalent to a bigot - all because I do not believe in his fairy-tale Magic Man In The Sky.
[link] As for the military's diversity, Blum said, the battlefield might be the greatest equalizer. "Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose all that when their life is on the line," Blum said. "Something that they lived their whole life believing gets thrown out the door, and they grasp the comrade next to them, and they don't care what color their skin is, and they don't care where they pray. They just care,'Can you save them? Can I trust you? Are you going to cover my back? Are you going to get me out of this?'"
How very... diverse of him. When the going gets tough, and when their life is on the line, the lazy, spineless atheists and agnostics will throw their entire philosophy "out the door" and become a brain-damaged god-botherer.
It makes me tired. This sort of mistaken notion and attitude is rampant in our American society, and to be honest I have no idea what can be done to change it. We atheists strike back using words and lawsuits out of self defense - because of the crushing majority seeking to invalidate, destroy, and deny not only our way of thinking, but us as individuals as well.
You Christians who claim that an American Christian theocracy is not a possibility need to take a good hard look at our government and notice who is in the positions of power. Imagine that you are in the minority and your goverment representatives oftentimes deny that you even exist, or that you are not "really" citizens, or that you are morally equal to bigots, or not worthy to marry their daughter or son.
Our very freedom to worship or not worship as we please is at risk here. Don't you folks understand that?

Most sane and knowledgeable people ARE atheists!!!
"Believers" if your God is so important, so powerful, so merciful, if you believe in his love and care and protection so much, why not rip off your armor, throw down your arms, stop all offensive, defensive, and evasive moves, lift up your hands to heaven and ask god, who promised NEVER to forsake you as a believer, to deliver you and your buddies from evil and harm? Why not?
Hey at home, why not refuse medical care for your beloved child and put your precious child’s fate in the hands of god who firmly PROMISED to heal all sickness if you believe? Why not?
Let me tell you why! You (assuming you are sane and knowledgeable) do NOT simply rely on god in critical situations BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ATHEIST! Plain and simple; a spade being called a spade!
Yup -- for every bloody excuse you give like "god doesn’t work that way" etc., etc., I say that you are just running from your ATHEISM!!! Oh deny it if you have to; call me silly, foolish, the devil, or whatever. BUT actions speak louder than words and FACE IT “BELIEVERS”: when the chips are down you believe in the power of god about as much as I (an HONEST atheist) do!!!! Because you know deep down that for all your prayers and worship and affirmations of faith, I (an honest ATHEIST) get the same bloody odds and results you do for any given action in a particular situation!! True believers go figure how that can be and what it means --- an atheist vs. believer – sameo-sameo – know you hate FACTS but it’s a fact!
Again, I’m honest, “Believers” you just think you are honest!
Get HONEST!!! Admit that you are god invoking god praising ATHEISTS at the core!!!
?
So he's saying that giving up skepticism is equivalent to giving up judging people by race?
Jesus, I'm used to atheists getting no respect, but if that isn't the single most insulting thing I've ever read, it's close...
He's just proving that we're smarter
That dude is a dick, but his comment shows that atheists are smarter than religious people. Religionists, when faced with a life-or-death situation, pray to a pretend guy. Atheists look to actual humans for actual help.
Who has the better chance of surviving?
Lead by Example
It makes me tired. This sort of mistaken notion and attitude is rampant in our American society, and to be honest I have no idea what can be done to change it.
I can understand your fatigue. However, sometimes stereotypes are better overcome through actions then words. When someone accuses atheists of being spineless bigots, doing something that tangibly improves the world can be a far more persuasive counterargument than an insult.
Works both ways
They just care,'Can you save them? Can I trust you? Are you going to cover my back? Are you going to get me out of this?'"
So a Christian wouldn't ask the same questions of an atheist if the Christian were the one in trouble? Seems to me the equalizing effect works both ways.
Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose all that when their life is on the line
Disgusting. Typical religious bigotry. Similar to grouping homosexuals with pedophilia, beastiality and bigamy. Since the equalizing effect works both ways, I guess the "bigots" must include Christians then?
You say that
Your comment is valid..but I want to point out something that bothers me. Why do you group pedo, bestiality and bigamy together? An animal can't make a contract, nor can a child..but bigamy shouldn't be in your listing.
Slippery Slope
I personally don't group them together. But as I recall during the debates over same-sex marriage, a lot of the homophobes were using the slippery slope argument that legalizing gay marriage will lead down the path to legalized bestiality and bigamy, and of course what homophobe can resist the temptation of playing the pedophile card. I didn't group them together, they did, I was just telling you what I heard.
But he said "you grab the
But he said "you grab the comrade next to you." Where is the Great Never Seen Being in this? You fight for and with the Human Being in the hole with you. No one else is there. Not consistently. And that is the point. Human Beings are mostly consistent (for good or bad -not good or evil, that is not relevant). Great Never Seen Being is not consistent. Can't count on GNSB. Want slob next to me I can count on. I know he will bug out but I want to be sure when. Up to then, I want to know the slob is there.
More
More crazy talk.
You want your GNSB..You want your slob...but it/he/she isn't there. It's in your imagination. It's a psychological ploy that you're playing with yourself. Give it up. Come to the light of reason. It's good here. It's pretty. Things have the meaning that you assign them, and that's really cool!
Come my child...
Come...
come...
nobody got the link?
It appears that so far, no one has thought to link to the popular site Atheists in Foxholes, which is a network of current and retired military personnel who are unbelievers.
But weren't you inspired
But Josh, didn't you find the deep faith of the Muslims in Iraq inspirational? Surely their willingness to die or to slit people's throats for Allah makes a strong argument for the truth of theism, no? You're just not looking at it in the right way.
(Heck, it's no worse than some other 'logic' I've heard from god-shouters)
Exactly. First the death of
Exactly. First the death of my friend, who was only 22, and then countless other deaths throughout my stay (yes, we all signed the contract...but there was, once upon a time, the act of defending your country). I sort of looked around at what was going on and just said to myself "Nope. There can't be...not even 'something greater.' Impossible. And if this 'all-loving, all-merciful' guy is up there, I hate him." I must add though, it isn't just because of death and destruction and endless mayhem that I am an atheist. However, it only contributes to it.
BS
This infuriates me. I'm another prime example of an "atheist in a foxhole." When I joined the Marines, I went through bootcamp with three of my closest friends who I had grown up with. One of them, a machine gunner, died in the January '05 helicopter crash in Iraq. This was just a couple of weeks before I left for a one-year deployment to the same country. If anything, being in that place for a year pretty much converted me from an agnostic to the atheist I am now.
Bully Bull Bull Bull
Of course it's malarky. The question is, where does it come from? Is it willful ignorance or can they really not comprehend that you can face battle and death without a belief in their magic sky fairy?
people
I agree with it.
