Who, me, cynical?
Submitted by Jim Downey on August 15, 2009 - 10:24am.Yeah, OK, I know I'm more cynical nowadays, but I think that even in my most charitable moods I would tend to see this as nothing more than a case of the Christian nuts being mercenary:
$6 million budget shortfall forces Focus on the Family to drop Ex-Gay program
Citing a “serious budget shortfall” the conservative Christian group, Focus on the Family has been prompted to issue a special fundraising plea, and has also decided to hand over control of its contentious “Love Won Out” Ex-Gay program to another religious organization, a FotF spokesman said Tuesday.
Focus on the Family is looking at a $6 million short fall in its $138 million budget for this fiscal year- a budget larger than all national and regional gay-equality organizations combined.
From the Love Won Out website:
So, why say it?
Submitted by Jim Downey on December 14, 2008 - 10:40am.Structure fires happen. Sometimes it's just an overloaded electrical outlet, sometimes it's carelessness with cooking, sometimes it's arson. You can seldom tell what the cause was until a competent investigation has been carried out. Almost always in the wake of a fire, even if arson is suspected, some local authority will make this kind of initial statement, as reported in an AP news story:
No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

"It's hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation," he said. "We have no information on intent or motive."
Just speculation. Investigation pending. Let us get on with our work.
Which is why I find it rather telling that someone involved with the structure in question - a church - finds it necessary to say this:
Local kids done good
Submitted by BrainArmor on October 27, 2008 - 11:26pm.Here in California we've got a stupid ballot initiative that seeks to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Well the money has poured into the state from the Mormons and Dobson's Focus on the Family group and they're blanketing the airwaves, planting signs, and fielding troops on the ground to stand and street corners in matching shirts who wave Yes on 8 signs.
I just read an article about some high school kids who are doing their part to fight against this. Here is a great quote from one of them:
"Prop. 8 is not only a religious issue. It's an issue of discrimination and prejudice. Who's to say atheists and agnostics won't be next?"
This is a kid who started a school club called the "Freethinking Atheist and Agnostic Kinship student club"
Just maybe there's hope after all...

Feeling a little haggard? (Sorry. That was just inappropriate. *snicker*)
[link] In January 2007, Ted Haggard voluntarily agreed to enter a process of spiritual restoration. He has selected Phoenix First Assembly and Pastor Tommy Barnett as his local church fellowship and is maintaining an accountability relationship there. He has recently requested to end his official relationship with the New Life Church Restoration Team and this has been accepted by them.
New Life Church recognizes the process of restoring Ted Haggard is incomplete and maintains its original stance that he should not return to vocational ministry. However, we wish him and his family only success in the future.
I honestly had no idea he was in Phoenix.
The whole "curing teh gay" thing is complete and utter bullshit. Haggard is, oddly enough, a victim of the entire Judeo-Christian anti-gay sentiment. As a young man it seems to have caused him to reject who and what he was, a gay man. He appears to have to shamefully hidden it from even himself for years, and engaged in dangerous sexual liaisons on the sly - probably rationalizing them in his own screwed-up brain every time as "reaching out to a sinner" or some such.
Sad really.
It hurts his family, which like it or not he is responsible for. I'll also bet the guy is losing his mind at this point after a year of anti-gay "cures", witch doctor's spells, and shamanic chanting. (Or whatever they do. Kill a chicken and read the guts? What?) I actually feel a little bit of pity for the poor guy. I hope he can resolve his personal situation in a healthy fashion, for his wife and kid's sake if for nothing else.
